we've witnessed susan smith. andrea yates. others. ..today san francisco bay is being searched for the bodies of 2 babies who were thrown in by their mother. a third was already recovered. yesterday this mother told HER mother that voices were telling her to throw her babies to the sharks. nobody took action. so she did. she was a diagnosed schizophrenic off her meds. who is responsible? who should be responsible? the doctors? children's services? the fathers of the children? other family members? where should the buck stop? Search resumes for kids in San Francisco Bay

I believe that it was the family's responsibility to step in and take matters into their own hands, if they knew how mentally out of it this woman was. They should have gone to a lawyer to go before a judge, to get an order to get this woman some forced mental health help. I know it's not always that easy, but I say it's a family's responsibility to step in to help their own.

I completely agree with Jab and Valerie. Mental problems pose such a challenge for family members. It is likely they were distancing themselves from her/didn't want to deal w/ her even despite the children. Knowing she was living in a halfway house, they probably chose to believe she was well watched and "fine". Truth is...no system can watch everybody. I agree at least somebody in that family should have been helping her out!

somebody diagnosed her. were they not mandated to report her condition to child protective services? ...i also think her mother had a duty to take action based on the statement she was going to throw the kids to the sharks. no-one here would have ignored that. some percentage of responsibility needs to be assigned to everyone who knew the situation. especially any professionals. only my opinion of course. i felt the same about that sorry bastard that was married to andrea yates and knew her condition. left her alone with the children anyway.
