OK - here is the situation. Have to get a wireless router to cover a distance of 500 to 600 feet to stretch a broadband connection to a building that runnng a cable to is not an option. To further complicate things, trees are in the direct line of sight.

I know I am going to need one kick ass router - but does anyone have any suggestions?

To be honest, with the current range of 802.11 you have not got a cat in hells chance.

Even with a wireless range extender, with trees in the way and no way of placing the said device between you and the target, you won't get it.

However, you could try the following sites, where home made extenders have been made from tin cans to pringle tubes, that extend the range sometimes upto quarter of a mile or more!

This is not a joke, check these sites out for more help and best of all costs next to nothing!

A Linksys Router 2.4GHz , 54Mbps should more than do the job. Cost about $55 U.S. This is what I use for my laptop and it works at my neighbors kitchen table with a strong signal------------over 1,000 feet through walls, trees, bushes witha strong signal.

Lon is right about the 802.11g systems - they have a great reach. If you are running a regular 802.11b system, you can connect buildings by using parabolic outside antennas. They are fairly inexpensive now - and are a lot cheaper than trenching to put in new cable!

Here's an example:

When I used to build wireless network systems, this type of setup would give us at least a couple of miles of range - using standard Cisco 802.11b units. Some guys got up to 5 miles - line of sight.
