What has been your biggest success story this summer ?
What are you doing to prepare for the winter ?
What will you do during the winter months instead of gardening ?

Summer success story: I had a vegetable garden for the first time.
What to look forward to about fall: nothing-it means winter is close behind, and I hate the cold weather here. Yesterday it was too cold to even wear shorts outside in the middle of the day, it is only the second week in Septmeber!-I miss the hot desert wind of the Southwest!

Ah lovely, lovely winter. I for 1 (and probably the only person) am looking forward to it - it's my favourite season u see.
Biggest success story? Hmm, difficult. Probably finding out that I had passed my diploma with flying colours was the highlight of my summer.
Leading up to winter, I'll be organising all the presents that need to be bought, finding suitable Christmas cards to send and building up for the (hopeful) snow that may grace our lands. Oh and my birthday, but's that still a while away yet

1. Shooting a sub 80 round of golf.
2. Absolutely nothing
3. Leave California for New Zealand
I would rater eat a plate of worms than garden. They just don't make tools long enough for real tall people and my knees are not in that great a shape, but I like and appreciate the work of those that love to garden.

You might like to try this then he he !
Recipe: Orange Worms
ORANGE WORMS
Yield: 13 Servings
2 cn Apricot halves packed in
-light syrup
4 Envelopes unflavored gelatin
2 c Orange juice
Wiggle these worms any way you want on your plate. If you like, give
them 'eyes' made from licorice bits.
Place apricots in colander and let drain. Place drained apricots in
food processor, cover, and whirl until well blended. Place gelatin in
3 quart pan, add orange juice, and let5 stand for 5 minutes to soften
gelatin. Place pan on burner and bring to a boil over med/high
heat, stirring with whisk. Turn off burner and remove pan to rack.
Add apricots and mix with whisk until well blended. Pour into baking
pan, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for about 4 hours, until
set. Use butter knife to cut gelatin crosswise into 9 inch long, 1
inch wide strips. (you should have about 13 strips) Use pancake
turner to remove strips to serving plate. Use your hands to twist
strips into worm shapes. Makes 13 worms.

This summer was special to me because I got to visit my family in North Dakota. I really cherish that time with them.
My favorite season is autumn and I am lookig forward to the colors and the cooler weather and the autumn festivities like Halloween and Fall Carnivals.

1. Put a new roof on our house and got the whole house painted.
2. Cutting, splitting and stacking firewood.
3. Shoveling snow, hiking and looking for the pack of coyotes that keep howling nightly in our yard, and just playing in all the snow with my dog.

Biggest success has been my 5 whiskey half barrels out front filled to over
flowing with 3 or 4 different types of zinnias, sunflowers. Did have great
tasting green beans but they are gone now. Don't really need to
prepare for winter quite yet but I do have plenty of firewood cut and
stacked...
Instead of gardening, I will spend about 12 hours a week watching
FOOTBALL!!!

Your barrels sound beautiful...any piccies ? I've seen barrels used as water features...a couple in the US have a website dedicated to theirs...I'll have to find it again.
It's so interesting to read all your posts. Here in the UK there's not to much difference in the climate between N,S,E,W although there is frequently a difference in the weather, but obviously in the States there's a HUGE difference. It's SO interesting. Keep posting, I love it

Biggest success - sorting out my overgrown garden to give valued plants much needed breathing space.
Preparations for winter: Planted some hyacinth bulbs to flower for Christmas (I hope)
What will I be doing instead of gardening: Curling up with a good gardening book, ordering seeds, surfing the net.

I have just cut my small lawn and it looks really good. The recent rain has made it really lush.
Most people stop mowing their lawn during the winter, but provided it's not TOO wet, I mow mine whenever I can. I hate it looking long and untidy.
Anyone else as nutty as me regarding their lawn ?

Summer was a bummer.. Business was frigheningly slow.Southeast coast of Georgia had to be at least 102 degrees by 9qm each day. Bright spot was my older son and granddaughter coming down for a visit.. However, I am thrilled to be making plans to go back to the beautiful Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. I cant wait to put on my turtle necks, sweaters, and rag socks again. Hot soup, hot chocolate, cabarnet, blankets, wood stoves, fireplaces. Gorgeous spring.. lovely fall.... Oh God let me get home. If all goes as planned Ill be back there by the beginning of December.

I like a well trimmed lawn-had to get a new mower last week, old gas powered one went out. Got an old fashioned push mower-much better! Trimmed the whole back yard yesterday, do the edges by hand-which is a lot because of the long sidewalk.
But I hate the idea that you don't take care of your lawns after a certain point in the season here in the Eastern US, I am used to lawn work every week in the warm Southwest. I hate brown yards and bleak trees in the winter time, so depressing.

For Weeder with best wishes for going home again...
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you
Look away, you rollin' river
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you
Look away. We're bound away
Across the wide Missouri
Now the Missouri is a mighty river
Look away, you rollin' river.
Indians camp along her border
Look away. We're bound away
Across the wide Missouri
Well a white man loved an Indian maiden
Look away, you rollin' river
With notions his canoe was laden
Look away, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri
Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter
Look away, you rollin' river
It was for her I'd cross the water.
Look away, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri
For seven long years I courted Sally
Look away, you rollin' river
Seven more years I longed to have her
Look away, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri
Well, it's fare-thee-well, my dear,
I'm bound to leave you
Look away you rollin' river
Shenandoah, I will not deceive you
Look away, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri

1. Biggest success was geting a desert "garden" in and established.
2. I'm canning veggies, separating tubor bulbs, insulating the house again.
3. UMMM EERRR during the winter I lay low - eat sleep and have a f%%king good time with the hubby.
Haven't any of you wondered why the FG has sooo many October to January births??
