SAN DIEGO -- Some 80 Gulf Coast evacuees who were rescued from the flood waters of Hurricane Katrina cheered and sobbed with relief after arriving here, part of the first wave of evacuees headed to California.

The group landed at San Diego International Airport around 5 p.m. Sunday aboard a 737 jet that was chartered from Baton Rouge, La., by Carmel Valley businessman David Perez, said Chris Manning, Red Cross response coordinator.

Perez, owner of Surge Global Energy, spent about $250,000 to charter a jet to bring 80 evacuees to San Diego Sunday. Perez was reloading the plane with supplies and planned to fly back Sunday night to pick up more displaced hurricane survivors.

This is great news...my sister and one of her daughters live in San Diego....a bit ironic that one of her other daughters lives in new orleans (she's currently with friends in florida)

That's some serious money he's spending for strangers. The TV report mentioned something about Sea World as well, but I don't know I that was him paying for it.

Brad Pitt draws a fat cheque to help build 90 hurricane-hit homes

Friday, 10 October , 2008, 13:02

Actor Brad Pitt, who recently left his New Orleans residence, has left behind a fat cheque to help build 90 homes in hurricane Katrina-wrecked New Orleans.

The philanthropist recently made it public that his Make It Right Foundation had raised enough money to put up new houses, in order to assist those people who had lost their homes to the hurricane Katrina, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Brad, who was recently speculated to split with girlfriend Angelina Jolie, recently also donated 100, 000 million dollars to fight California's Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that would ban same-sex couples' right to marry.

Moreover, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s foundation had announced a 2-million dollars donation to Global Health Committee to set up a TB and HIV/AIDS clinic in Ethiopia to help treat the affected children.

The Jolie-Pitt Foundation was established in September 2006, when the duo had supported the Global Action for Children organization and Doctors Without Borders by donating 1 million dollars to each.
