Labor Day!

Post by ChristinaP »

I work in news, and this is the first holiday I've taken off all year long. I've had a busy weekend so far, taking the kids to the county fair and the air show. Today I am just going to relax by the pool and read. I was immersed in Katrina coverage all last week, and needed this break badly.

Back to it tonight though.

Ooh, thanks for the reminder, but it's only 1 ish! I kind of want to wait till AFTER the BF's dad leaves to get silly. We had kind of an embarassing experience last time he saw me tipsy and I'd hate to remind him of it.

It is an annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of the workers, and to give them a day off!

We deserve it!

And it applies to both sides of the border, here in Canada as well as the USA.

No big plans it looks nice outside so maybe off to visit car lots with the beau, and see what I can see.

;) ;) Whitsun (Pentecost)

Whitsun is the name for the Church festival otherwise called Pentecost held on the seventh Sunday after Easter.

The word Pentecost means fiftieth day after the Sabbath of the Passover. Thus it is fifty days after Easter Sunday.

Whisuntide falls in May. It starts with Whit Sunday, which is always the seventh sunday after Easter Sunday.

Whit Sunday commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit in the form of flames to the disciples (Apostles), as recorded in the New Testament. It is often called Pentecost because when the disciples received the Holy Spirit and began to go out and preach about Jesus it was the Jewish festival of Pentecost.

Because it marked the first preaching about Jesus, it is called the birthday of the Christian Church. Whit Sunday is a favourite day for baptism. It is thought that as people baptised are often dressed in white it was probably originally 'White Sunday'

Customs and Traditions

Whitsuntide was the period on May games, mainly for the young people who, after dancing around the maypole, would try out their strength and skills in wrestling and archery contests. Other games included foot races, trying to catch a greased pig, or making a funny face through a horse collar, climbing a greasy pole, running after a pig with a shaved and well soaped tail, sack racing plus singing and dancing.

Bread and Cheese Throwing

In Gloucestershire, Whit Sunday is called 'Bread and Cheese Day' because of a very strange custom. Sounds like fun to me.. :D

In St Braivels, Gloucestershire, following evensong on Whit Monday, basketfuls of bread and cheese are thrown from a wall near the old castle, to be scrambled for in a lane below. The locals of St Braivels have been hurling bread and cheese since the 13th century, when the custom began probably as a payment for the villagers' right to cut timber from a nearby wood.

Cheese Rolling

The first Sunday or Monday in May is a unique opportunity to witness the ancient custom of cheese rolling.

Gloucester cheese Rolling. Randwick, Gloucestershire, England:

After rolling three double Gloucester cheeses around the church, one is cut up and shared amongst bystanders and the other two are rolled down a steep hill.

Stilton Cheese Rolling. Stilton, Cambridgeshire:

Teams of four, in bizarre costumes, roll stilton cheese along a 50-yard course. They must not kick or throw the cheeses. The prize is a whole Stilton Cheese, which weighs about 16 pounds, and bottles of port”the traditional accompaniment.

Edam Cheese Rolling. Ide Hill, Kent:

Women chase a thrown edam cheese down the sloping village green during the annual Whit Monday Fair

Cheese rolling also takes place in other areas around England.

Whit Walks

Whitsun was also the time for walks and possessions. The traditional "Procession of Witness" has long been celebrated throughout the North West.

Whitsun Ales (village festivals)
ALOHA!!

MOTTO TO LIVE BY:

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming.

WOO HOO!!, what a ride!!!"
