I'm a slug. I'm never going to get this book read unless I'm forced, so let's get this book club started.

I'm sure others have read the book recently? I read it years ago, and I'm finding it almost new. I love the way Adams uses word twists and such in his humor.

I bought HG (well, the trilogy in four parts) a couple of weeks ago but I know I won't begin it until the book club starts. So when are we starting?

About an hour and a half ago.

Sorry, I've never been in a book club and have no idea how it goes. You?

I'm sorry, I was unclear. I'm starting it. since it's us, then it's us what makes the rules. Let's call it The Us Rules of Online Book Clubs.

Rule #1: We make it up as we go along.
Rule #2: Any subsequent rules may be modified on the fly.
Rule #3: Any disagreement about subsequent rules or modifications shall be settled by referring to Rule #1.

I adapted our house rules that are on a plaque in the kitchen.

	All in favor type AYE.

I've just read chapter 1 and chapter 2 is only 3 pages. I'd be happy with a chapter a day, or 2 if one is very short.

It's been almost an hour with no other suggestions so, as the rules clearly state, that's what we'll do. Chapter 1&2 today 3 & 4 tomorrow.

I just love the destruction crew. That's the way so many bureaucrats are. In the absence of written instructions, and some cases in spite of them, a strong personality can pretty much do what they want. If given instructions, however, no amount of good sense will sway them from following orders.

My hero is Ford Prefect (a "nicely inconspicuous" name). A hero who doesn't understand sarcasm. This is my very first reading of HG and it promises to be hilarious. I love its style and humour.

I didn't have that problem because I remember the old Ford Prefect car. And of course that made it even more amusing to me.

I'm having great difficulty keeping up with everyone's comments. :yh_sweat Could we possibly slow it all down a bit and give the older members of the book club time to marshal their thoughts and post their comments. It could, I suppose, be made into a rule? :-3
Thank you.

He can actually write humorously about towels!! Largish ones from M and S! That is just so brilliant.
Loved the PA from the Galactic Hyperspace Planning Council (nothing has changed when it comes to Planning).
But strangely couldn't relate to the characters in chapter 4. Well, not yet. Perhaps I missed the humour? Or maybe I want to get back to Arthur and FP to whom I feel I can relate...

I know what you mean. I was both frustrated for the guy and laughing at the situation! :wah:

I believe chapter 4 is just setting something up later.
Y'know ... just in case this isn't fiction, I think I'll keep a towel handy.

Me? A Vogon? No! I don't sit on gazelle-like creatures and snap their backs just for the fun of it. I'm no Galactic Civil Servant. And I'm not thoroughly vile (usually).
Definitely a Dentrassis. Well, excluding some of their less desirable routines.
A two word entry for earth! That puts us into perspective, I must say.
And don't you just love Teasers? Adams is a genius.
