One in three men over 45 is suffering from hidden prostate disease, according to an alarming report.

But most men are ignoring the symptoms because of embarrassment or fear.

About 45 per cent suffer in silence for more than a year before consulting a doctor.

Experts warned that the incidence of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH),which currently affects 2.5 million men in Britain,is likely to double in the next ten years.

They say turning a blind eye to the symptoms of the condition could also prove fatal. The warning signs are often identical to those of prostate cancer, which kills 10,000 men a year.

Senior doctors are backing a new campaign to raise men's awareness of prostate health.
