DENVER -- A manhunt is under way in Idaho for a registered sex offender from Colorado who allegedly stabbed his 12-year-old daughter while they were on a camping trip.
Authorities say John Rollins Tuggle is a convicted sex offender.
Sheriff's officials in Idaho said the girl had numerous stab wounds all over her body when passersby found her tied and bound along a rural road in the Idaho Panhandle, late Wednesday. She had been lying wounded on the road for four to six hours before she was spotted, officials said.
A medical helicopter airlifted the girl to a hospital in Couer d'Alene, Idaho, about 90 miles away. The girl was then transferred to a Spokane, Wash., hospital. She was listed in critical condition following surgery Thursday afternoon, but was expected to survive.
Idaho authorities identified 37-year-old John Rollins Tuggle as the suspect in the case and issued an arrest warrant charging him with attempted murder. They said no other suspects were being sought.
Criminal records obtained by 7News show Tuggle served nine years in an Idaho prison for the statutory rape of a relative. He was released from prison in January 2004. Tuggle lived with his brothr in Hayden, Colo, the Routt County Sheriff's Office told the Steamboat Pilot & Today newspaper. He most recently worked as a painter in Steamboat Springs, the newspaper reported on its Web site.
"We have the whole world looking for him," said Shoshone County Sheriff Chuck Reynalds.
Deputies have interviewed the girl and were searching areas where Tuggle has relatives, the sheriff said.
The girl lives in Idaho. Tuggle had traveled there to visit his daughter, who he apparently hadn't seen in 10 years. He told the girl's mother that he was taking her to the mall and then disappeared, officials said.
Tuggle is described as 6 feet tall, 200 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes and numerous tattoos. He may also have a goatee.
Tuggle is an "outdoorsy person" who could be hiding in remote areas of the mountainous Idaho Panhandle, Reynalds said.
He's believed to be driving a 1989 Ford Escort, with Colorado plate number 329-JXG. The license plate is registered to Tuggle at a Hayden, Colo., address, according to motor vehicle records.
Tuggle should be considered armed and dangerous, authorities said, as he is known to carry large knives. Anyone with information on Tuggle is asked to call the Shoshone County, Idaho Sheriff's Office at (208) 556-1114.
The manhunt began just weeks after another registered sex offender was arrested in Idaho in connection with the abduction of a young girl and her brother and the slayings of three adults.
The brother's body was found at a Montana campground. The 8-year-old girl was freed after a waitress at a restaurant in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho spotted her with the man and notified authorities.
The 12-year-old girl in the latest case is recovering at the same hospital in Spokane that the girl from the earlier abduction was admitted to for a week after her ordeal.
