Given the way the present US administration is going, we need a thread on Taiwan/China reunification.

For one thing, I'm not sure why Taiwan would want to avoid it any longer. For another, Taiwan can quite likely come to a very effective deal with the mainland at the moment if it makes the effort.

Having watched the progress of reunification in Hong Kong I can see every reason why Taiwan would want to avoid it.

Would you consider reunification with Taiwan expansionist, or is it more equivalent to America's fear of Cuba as a foreign dominated unsinkable base?

One question in my mind is whether the present White House would choose to initiate a firing war with China in the event of a Falklands-style invasion of Taiwan. Because if not, I'm stuck for a deterrent during the three-year window of opportunity here. It's not as though threats of increased tariffs are going to have leverage. I suspect Taiwan is as unprotected at the moment as the Falklands were under John Nott.
