SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A set of meticulously-kept notebooks has police in San Jose, Calif., fearing they may have uncovered one of the "most active" child molesters ever seen.
Investigators are seeking the public's help in identifying possible victims of 63-year-old Dean Arthur Schwartzmiller, who's been jailed without bail in the case.
In Schwartzmiller's home, police discovered handwritten lists of more than 36,000 children's names, mostly boys, and codes that appear to indicate how he abused them. Police said the case could involve thousands of victims in at least five U.S. states as well as Brazil and Mexico. They discussed the case for the first time yesterday, in part to urge other victims to come forward.
One of the man's neighbors said she's been suspicious for months. She barred her two sons from going into his home after she said Schwartzmiller bought them treats from an ice cream truck.
Although convicted of molestation, Schwartzmiller never registered as a sex offender, so his history had never turned up in databases in California or other states......
