A Gang of arthritic pensioners who robbed 14 German banks to boost their retirement funds were given hefty prison sentences yesterday by a judge who said that old age was no excuse for bad behaviour.
The three men have become unlikely heroes in Germany where people have been protesting against the harshness of welfare and pension reforms.
''It is unbelievable how easy it is to rob a bank'', boasted a 78-year old before being sentenced to 10 years in prison.
On one raid he slipped on ice, dropping the loot and had to be carried to the get-away car.
Other robberies had to be interrupted to allow him to relieve himself, because he had a weak bladder.
