In my opinion, the schools response is the correct response. At the same time, I can imagine the riots were this a white male professor spouting off against African americans, women or the gay community

Any teacher, at any level, who takes their personal politics into the classroom is a fool and not worthy of the profession. Even if this professor only posted on his free time and at home, educators enjoy a special place in societies.

It's not a law, but it is an unwritten code, that teachers should refrain from making extremist views public. The very fact that they are educators tends to give credence and lend a certain weight to their opinions. It's a spillover of the teacher mystique learned in childhood.

It may only be a perceived problem, but as my old commanding officer once told me, "A perceived problem is a real problem."
