I am continuously fascinated by how folks get so riled up over DST.
Umm,...
Gauntlets. They're called gauntlets when they have a historical military provenance. A policeman wearing gloves would be lampooned by his colleagues. Or were they disposables?magentaflame wrote: ↑Wed Apr 07, 2021 3:20 pm My apologies I just saw footage of a policeman wearing gloves.
Your comment of Police and working class career criminals could be correct. I don't know of any though, I don't get so involved with people. One thing I noticed in the last couple of weeks is the "anxy" feeling around the pub. I even mentioned it recently. There has also been a few blow ins not going away as well (hence my situation, but because they are a friend of a friend)spot wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 2:30 am Dear "Worried Reader",
Your better class of people comment sounds feasible, but what you describe could be an underlying factor of life in Victoria. I speak from a position of total ignorance as usual, but I have dim recollections of 20th century Australian TV and spin-off films describing Melbourne's police as corrupt and the city being run by working-class career criminals with more money than sense. If there's any truth to that international image, you may simply have entirely unsuitable acquaintances at your local pub.
The picture the world has of Australian pubs is that they have extremely limited opening hours, that customers time their departure from work to coincide with a small window of opportunity, and once at the bar they sink pints of frozen four-X every ten minutes until closing time. Again this may be an inaccurate picture, but if it has any truth you might improve your social milieu at a table of a sushi bar in a quieter part of town.

Ever since Wayne La Pierre took over the NRA in the 70s, their focus has been on refuting any reasonable gun legislation, period.magentaflame wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 4:15 pm I hope Biden's new gun control legislation gets up. How could the NRA have a problem with those laws? Ghost guns really?
While I like the occasional brewski as much as the next guy, I've concluded that people who drink in public are basically practicing poor judgement, and are just waiting for the opportunity to expand on the concept.magentaflame wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 4:06 pmBLOODY NORA!!!!LarsMac wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 8:33 am I learned long ago to avoid doing favors for, or helping strangers, or even neighbors with whom I have only a passing acquaintance, at pubs - or anywhere that alcohol consumption is a significant focus of activity.

Okay I don't want to be put in that situation.
I disagree. What kind of drinking are you talking about? I go to the pub twice a week (actually less now) I have two pots and go home. I go for the socialisation not to drink per se. You're probably right. We are half a world apart. Here in the Good Ol' US of A, we like to do things in the extreme. I can drink fairly responsibly, these days, but I can't hang around the average pub for long. You can feel the Mean IQ drop by the hour. And lately too many of them are carrying guns. There's a reason that Marshal Earp decreed that everybody had to check their guns with the barkeep.magentaflame wrote: ↑Fri Apr 09, 2021 12:44 pmI disagree. In my country we call that one law for the rich and another for the poor. I expect the chap believes he's a good driver.Tiger Woods was speeding when he crashed an SUV in Southern California less than two months ago, leaving the golf superstar seriously injured, authorities said on Wednesday. Woods was driving 84-87 mph on a downhill stretch of road outside Los Angeles that had a speed limit of 45 mph, Los Angeles county sheriff Alex Villanueva said. Detectives did not seek search warrants for the athlete’s blood samples, which could have been screened for drugs or alcohol, or his cellphone. Sheriff's officials said there was no evidence of impairment or of distracted driving.

I'm afraid I find what this man has done as reprehensible. Does he have no soul? At least he didn't try to put smiley faces on the "after torture" photos. But at least he left the children alone. There are many degrees of torture, but what the Khmer Rouge did to those people was not torture..... there are no words in human history to describe what they did to those people.spot wrote: ↑Mon Apr 12, 2021 1:00 pmIs outraging public decency still an attribute of the unskilled artist?Authorities in Cambodia have criticised an artist after he altered photos of victims of the Khmer Rouge genocide.

My nine year old's Photoshop skills include what Mr Loughrey is described as having done but I'm sure my nine year old has more empathy than to do it.

We have a road like that near here - it’s a forty limit and if you’re not paying attention you can quickly be doing forty five, fifty, not eighty five that takes effort.LarsMac wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 12:19 pmA friend of mine said that road is famous for its downhill grade, and if you're not paying attention, it can get the better of you very quickly.magentaflame wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 11:13 amSo he deliberately sped? So, if you're already speeding, like most Americans, these days, and perhaps a bit pre-occupied, suddenly you're coming up on a curve and picking up speed because you're on a down slope, then you over-react. Nope. He was in Beverly Hills when he crashed. Apparently at a major street intersection.
If you're paying attention to what you're doing, then, yes, it is easy to mind the speed limit and mange your vehicle properly.magentaflame wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 9:46 pm Do you lot all drive autos? Two men were killed after a Tesla car crashed into a tree and caught fire in Texas, and police believe there was nobody present in the driver's seat at the time of the accident.
The 2019 Tesla Model S was travelling at a high speed when it failed to negotiate a curve on a winding road.
The victims, both in their 50s, were found in the front passenger seat and in the back of the vehicle.

LINK: Anti-vaccination protesters storm Westfield shopping centre and clash with police
"Hundreds of anti-vaccination protesters stormed Westfield in Shepherds Bush on Saturday evening.
Pictures and videos from the shopping centre show a huge group of people clashing with police as they attempted to enter the building.
Once inside, protesters lit red flares as terrified staff locked themselves inside shops and customers fled.
Officers soon gained control of the situation and moved the demonstrators back outside.
At about 7pm, the Met tweeted: “The situation is now calm at Westfield, W12. Officers remain on scene, and the crowd is dispersing.”"
I'm not convinced panic can have been involved. A pop-up demonstration like that took a lot of deliberate organizing.
