So, perhaps the cities can set about harvesting sewage for useable resources.

I can already see the next reality TV show.

a group of guys start traveling the country looking for old cesspools and septic systems from which they can extract precious metals.

I am sure I have watched a TV documentary about Indian excrement clearers that were doing it for the gold they found, very low tec.
