The mother-of-one admits that she can't understand the difference between bread when it's toasted and when it's not.

Well my gramma was poor, and she knew how to cook.

Though I have to agree with the Baroness. We run across a lot of people, these days who can't boil water.

I reckon that if you never learn from your grandparents or your parents how to prepare food, then when it's your turn in the kitchen you will be lost. and then you can't teach your own children.

Our son's first wifey never learned, and their kids never knew how to cook until the Wife and I gave them lessons.

I think these days, It's more a question of time and not lack of capability. The world Is a greedier place. Big houses, 4 cars, etc and that means both parents working leaving no time to teach kids to cook. Then the food manufacturers have taken advantage of that with ready meals and tv dinners. I don't blame Mothers these days especially single Mums who have to work and don't have time.

Give you an example.. I was In a supermarket recently, a large one the size of an aircraft hanger and finally after giving up, I asked an assistant where Lamb's Kidney's were. Oh we don't sell them any more as nobody wants them.

I learned from watching my Mom, who wasn't much of a cook but that didn't stop her. We are not talking rocket science.

I've heard of that, too. But dog food is not cheap.

Exactly. I guess the old guy was comparing it with a steak. There are cheaper and better ways than eating too many steaks.

Seriously, though, ironic as it may sound, dog food is probably better quality than many of the tinned meat equivalents meant for human consumption as there seem to be stricter controls on additives for animal foodstuffs than there are for us mere human beings. Human tins of food would be loaded with artificial preservatives, colourings, flavourings, etc.

(I've purposely chosen a couple of the more premium brands, from the same retailer, so as to compare like with like)

In my house Monday is bean and cheese burrito night!

I sometimes am tempted to tuck in dogfood. When I'm hungry and someone opens a tin. It smells sooooo gooood.:wah:

If he can afford dog food, he can afford the raw ingredients to cook real food. And what's this about the poor not knowing how to cook? Pfft. The poor work in all the restaurants! I should know, it's how I ate for 10 years!

You misunderstand: I was the poor, and I ate at the restaurant because I cooked there.:wah:

The poorest that work at 'restaurants' are those in such places as McDonalds. Hardly any standard of cooking, and hardly a balanced diet - unless you consider a burger in each hand 'balanced'.

Yep. My first job at 15. I ate nothing but a quarter pounder with cheese plain, fries, and a chocolate shake for an entire year. I served the first egg mcmuffin in my town.

I was watching this story on BBC. Personally I reckon it's a brilliant idea.

On the face of it that was a ridicous statement.

What I find interesting is the Telegraph would publish this.

What is relation to this Baroness Jenkin gal and the Telegraph?
