Sunday night started at sundown Saturday and lasted until sunrise Sunday morning, thus the 4th night.

And when did Thursday night start?

Sundown Thursday to Sunup Friday = night one

Sundown Friday to Sunup Saturday = night two

Sundown Saturday to Sunup Sunday = night three

Where is the fourth night?

Bryn Mawr,

re: "And when did Thursday night start?"

It started at sundown at the end of Wednesday.

re: "Where is the fourth night?"

Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday night - 4 nights.

If that comment is directed to me, what is "bass ackwards" about it? I was asked when did Thursday night start?

I replied that It started at sundown at the end of Wednesday. When do you say it started?

Changing the definition to make an apparent contradiction does not mean that there is a contradiction, it means that your definition is wrong.

The night starting sundown Wednesday is Wednesday night just as the Sabbath starts on Friday night - sundown Friday.

Bryn Mawr,

re: "The night starting sundown Wednesday is Wednesday night..."

That is incorrect. Wednesday night had been over some 12 hours by the time Wednesday daytime ended at sundown. And at that moment Thursday night began.

re: "...just as the Sabbath starts on Friday night.."

The Sabbath starts right after sundown at the end of Friday daytime. Friday night had been over some 12 hours by the time Friday ended.

OK, regardless of what you call the nights, Luke 23:56 to Luke 24:1 and John 19:28 to John 20:1 both appear to be quite specific, Jesus died and way buried on Friday afternoon and the tomb was found to be open on Monday morning - that to me is three days and three nights in anyone's money.

In case you haven't noticed, there are few biblical scholars hanging out in this garden.

But since the Bible, itself seems terribly unclear on the matter, I don't think it was considered a very important issue by the people who wrote it.

I don't think one needs to be a biblical scholar to know if they believe the crucifixion took place on the 6th day of the week.

Depends on whose week we are talking about. The The Hebrew week starts on Friday night, so it would have been the seventh day. The First Day began at sundown Friday.

Interesting thing is that Mat 28 says that on the first day of the week, at sunrise the the two Mary s found the tomb open. So he was only in the tomb overnight so it is still Shabbat, the first day. Obviously the tomb was not the "Heart of the Earth" in which he was going to spend three days.

We're talking about the week the Messiah was using in the 1st century.

That's a new one on me if by Friday night you mean the 1st half of the 6th calendar day of the week. What is your source?

1st day of the Hebrew week is Sunday. Saturday, shabbat, day when G-d rested followed his work week of six days Sunday through Friday, making Saturday the last day of the week, not the first.

Got into this conversation late, so never read what came before it. I regret entering it at all, but that's what idleness will do.

I actually knew that. However, the other day, I had a really bad slip and ended up with the worst Sciatic nerve pinch ever, and after a day of dealing with it, I took a dose of my Demerol, which really sends me off to never-never land.

Frankly, I was surprised to see how coherent my typing seemed that day.

The Mrs says that my daughter called that day, ad we talked for over an hour.

She hasn't returned my calls or replied to me on FB since.

The good news is that the sciatic kinda straightened itself out, and I am able to walking again, so back to Ibuprofen.

You aren't terribly intuitive, are you?

Good pain meds will contribute to some rather illogical thinking.

And no, not many people visit this thread, and even fewer seem to give much thought to your question.

There are lots of people who enjoy arguing about stuff like the most minute points of biblical texts.

And,

There are also folks who like to argue about The Vedic Texts, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, or the canon of the Star Wars story lines, or the meaning of the Game of Thrones scripts.

Why don't you go bother those people for a while?

LarsMac,

re: "Then, what, pray tell, is the point of you?"

OK, let me repeat again:

1. The Messiah said that He would be three days and three nights in the "heart of the earth"

2. There are those who think that the crucifixion took place on the 6th day of the week with the resurrection taking place on the 1st day of the week.

3. Of those, there are some who think that the "heart of the earth" is referring to the tomb.

4. A 6th day of the week crucifixion/1st day of the week resurrection allows for only 2 nights to be involved.

5. To account for the lack of a 3rd night, there may be some of those mentioned above who say that the Messiah was employing common figure of speech/colloquial language.

6. I am simply asking anyone who may fall into the above group to provide examples to support the belief of commonality; i.e., instances where a daytime or a night time was forecast or said to be involved with an event when no part of the daytime and/or no part of the night time could have occurred.
