WASHINGTON (Reuters) - American jailers at the Guantanamo prison for foreign terrorism suspects splashed a Koran with urine, kicked and stepped on the Islamic holy book and soaked it with water, the U.S. military said on Friday.

U.S. Southern Command, responsible for the prison at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, described for the first time five cases of "mishandling" of a Koran by U.S. personnel.

It should never have happened but isn’t it worse for a Muslim to walk into a mosque and blow himself up along with other Muslims and Korans because someone there wants peace? IF you were allowed to live as one of their prisoners do you think they would even let you have a Torah? What do you think they would do to a Bible if it belonged to a missionary, let alone a terrorist?

In the incident involving urine, which took place this past March, Southern Command said a guard left his observation post, went outside and urinated near an air vent, and "the wind blew his urine through the vent" and into a cell block. It said a detainee told guards the urine "splashed on him and his Koran." The statement said the detainee was given a new prison uniform and Koran, and that the guard was reprimanded and given duty in which he had no contact with prisoners. Army Capt. John Adams, a spokesman at Guantanamo, said the inquiry deemed the incident "accidental."

You are right. I just hate to see the misdeeds of a few be treated like they were carrying out policy, and that is what will happen. The other side would do it as a matter of policy and get away with it, while for us, this will be a setback in our effort to stop atrocities of a much greater magnitude.

Making certain every abusive action US soldiers take gets publicized is the only oversight these guys have. The troops have proven they are not the moral high ground they proclaim to be but immature, under educated, under-trained racists with no responsible command. Unless these incidents are made public, US troops will further damage the international image of our country. Those that could care less about that will be periodically reminded as our own POW's, contractors and other civilians are treated the same.

No doubt written by a highly educated, morally correct, completely matured patriot who loves his fellow man no matter what his/her station in life. Our POWs and contractors would gladly endure a little urine to have their heads back.

If vitriolic hate spawned in misinformation and blinding anger makes one a patriot, then I suppose you are the real deal.

Well, in the cold light of day, and trying to take an completely objective view, is it worse to be disrespectful to a copy of the Koran (which is quite an offensive thing to do) or to slaughter 4,000 innocent people by smashing planes into the sides of buildings (mmmmm?)
