In the wake of the recent protests when, horror of horrors, doctors gave emergency treatment to people given life threatening injuries by the police - the government has passed a law making it illegal for a doctor to give emergency treatment without prior written authority from the Ministry of Health :-

Wow ! Thats just outrageous. Why would you put your own citizens in such mortal danger ?

The sentence for saving a person's life... up to 3 years and a US$ 1 million fine. What civilised society would seriously propose that ? Appalling !

To me, the right of a people to protest is fundamental, to kill at least five and injure at least seven thousand in putting down a protest and then introduce such a draconian measure so that you can kill more next time is the act of a dictatorship, not a democracy that we should be backing to the tune of trillions each year.

That's what happens when you get religious political parties trying to take control, protest becomes a challenge to their god given right to rule not just a protest against the government any means to curb dissent becomes legitimate. In turkey they are trying to do away with secular government that is what is at the heart if all the protests. You had the same in Bahrain where doctors were sent to jail with draconian sentences for helping those who were injured in protests yet the western governments made not a peep of protest.

Kamil Attaturk knew what he was doing all those years ago when he set up the Turkish constitution and it's brought prosperity and stability to the country ever since (certainly in terms relative to their neighbours). As you say, as soon as a part of the population start trying to change it, the situation appears to be rapidly descending into chaos.

My guess is that the Islamists are going to win - it's city vs country and city is outnumbered.

I wonder if it would have unfolded any differently had they succeeded in the attempt to join the EU?

Moot point, but we do seem to be living in a period where religion and the establishment are trying to fight back against democracy and the concept of human rights. Even in the UK it has happened with more faith schools and now moves to repeal the human rights act based on spurious arguments.
