In the spirit of Bruv's US goes anti gay thread I have another assnine bill going on in Kansas.

KCTV reports (Teachers could spank harder under pending bill - KCTV5 ) Rep. John Rubin, chairman of the House Corrections and Juvenile Justice Committee, says he isn't sure the committee will even consider the bill.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas lawmaker is proposing a bill that would allow teachers, caregivers and parents to spank children hard enough to leave marks.

Current Kansas law allows spanking that doesn't leave marks. Rep. Gail Finney, a Democrat from Wichita, says he wants to allow up to 10 strikes of the hand and that could leave redness and bruising. The bill also would allow parents to give permission to others to spank their children.

It would continue to ban hitting a child with fists, in the head or body, or with a belt or switch.

Finney says she wants to restore parental rights, and improve discipline.

KCTV reports (Teachers could spank harder under pending bill - KCTV5 ) Rep. John Rubin, chairman of the House Corrections and Juvenile Justice Committee, says he isn't sure the committee will even consider the bill.

Don't get me wrong. I grew up getting hundreds if not thousands of spankings, whippings, and paddlings from my parents, relatives and teachers. I always told my parents that I would never touch one of my kids, and I never did. They all grew up to be respectable professional adults and college graduates without ever spanking them.

I had teachers swat me hundreds of times, with wooden paddles, leaving huge bruises on my ass for things as small as coming into class 1 second after the bell.I got three of the hardest swats from a teacher I ever had for losing a volleyball game in gym class that left deep purple bruises on my butt cheeks for almost two weeks. When I tried to refuse them they called my Dad and he told me to take the swats and think how my ass was going to feel when I got home from the ones he was going to give me.

I can't believe we feel the need to legislate spanking our kids until they bruise for up to 10 swats. Yeah they are making a ten swat rule. And they are possibly legislating so that teachers and other caregivers can spank also.

Any teacher or caregiver to my grandsons that feels they need to spank them is likely going to take a bit of spanking from grandpa.

Are you allowed to hit your Mrs up to ten times leaving a mark? Or do you get arrested for that?

They do it because they care! There's a name for people who wants to hit children. pedophile.

I can understand a parent smacking a child in the heat of the moment or to drive home a point about not doing something dangerous but to want to beat a child is sick. For someone to discuss how hard is - oh sod it you get my drift. It's sick - looks at children like little animals that can be conditioned to behave properly

I see no problem with a slap on the butt to get attention.

I can't remember more than maybe three/four official spankings from my dad. I can still see the belt or hair brush he used. It was all with my dad's explanation, lecture just to torment me.

Maybe a few swats, I suppose to shame me.

I remember my brother once coming out laughing.

At school, was either a flat board or ping pong paddle.

None of the above ever left a mark, nor was it necessary to leave one, maybe would have done some good for my brother.

Like the other Kansas thread, for the moment, the bill has been proposed, but it has not yet negotiated the process to becoming a law.

Don't write Kansas off, just yet

I was never ever spanked as a child. We were threatened with a verbal lecture from our Father which depending on the severity of the misdemeanor, could last until the small hours. He had a way of peering at you over his spectacles that was enough to silently tell you that you were out of order.

However, when I started primary school just under the age of 5, I very quickly learned that others were literally terrified of a wizzened old prune called Mrs G***.

The reason was, she liked hitting kids.... a lot.

One day In a modelling class aged 5, my friend Jane and I spilt some modelling clay. She called us up to the front of the class and hit us each In front of all the other children. Even at that young age, I felt as If I had been assaulted. Having parents who not so much as raised their voices to us, even at that young age, I remember feeling violated. It really affected me and to this day, I can recall every minute of that class.

As I got older, I vowed If I ever saw the old bag In the street, I'd punch her In the face but sadly she retired and moved away.

That Is the effect a stranger hitting your child has and why no-one should ever have the right to hitting anyone's child.

When I was at school they still had corporal punishment - in our case it was the tawse. There were always sadistic teachers who enjoyed using it too much the good ones seldom did.

I'm trying to think of a constructive lesson a child needs to learn that would be best taught by repeatedly striking the child. I'm coming up blank. I can think of many negative lessons that the child would learn that a child would learn from the experience, but nothing positive.

Yes, some were. When I look back at this Mrs G***, I can't recall her hitting boys. She seemed to hone In on girls. When I got to Grammar School, there was an English teacher who I found extremely encouraging yet by all accounts, he was a sadistic bully to the boys, especially the boarders. We still had the cane then but he was a kitty cat with the girls.

It makes you wonder why some of these people went Into teaching doesn't It?

There was corporal punishment in schools when I first started a couple of decades ago. It was pretty severe, too. They had a four inch (9 cm) wide leather strap attached to a wooden handle and they really laid it on as hard as they could. It never had any effect whatsoever, as far as I can tell. The ones who got the "swats" never changed their behavior, got in trouble just as much as ever, and it seemed to me that 5% of the whole student body got the vast majority of the swats.

They eventually gave it up. I think because of lawsuits, or maybe they just realized it wasn't working. Now they just suspend the kid, or given enough repeat offenses, expel them (and send them to another community's school system.)
