Over the weekend me and the wife drove to Des Moines Iowa for National duals wrestling, where my youngest son was participating.

Saturday after one of his matches he needed some things from Walmart so we went to get them for him. My wife asked while walking through the store if my knee hurt, she said it seemed like I was dragging it or limping. I told her no I was fine. After my sons next wrestling match I went to stand up and had a spell of being light headed. Sat back down and it went away.

Sunday went to the matches and after his first match stood up and was lightheaded again, sat back down and it was gone. Got done with wrestling around 3:00pm and head home for 5 1/2 hour drive. During the drive we came upon several emergency vehicles and trying to figure out which side of the road they were on became a problem for me and couldn't quite figure out which lane to be in (it was dark by now). Finally my wife told me to get in the right lane so I did and slowed down. No biggy. Got home around 8:30. Unloaded the car, made a drink, At this time I was thinking about the "episodes" I'd had and decided to take a couple of aspirin. Took my drink and went to sit in my chair. Took a sip and suddenly I was dizzy as hell. My wife asked if I was ok? No, something aint right. We waited a few minutes to see if it would subside and it didn't.

She then drove me to the emergency room where the tests began. My blood pressure was sky rocketed and by this time I had a hard time standing, when trying to focus on objects they would drift in my eyesight. They did 2 different ct scans and nothing showed, through the night my blood pressure stayed extremely high, Cindy (my wife) kept asking if they were going to give me something for my blood pressure, the ER doc told her that the Doc in charge whom he was in contact with told them NOT to give me any blood pressure lowering medicine even though mine was very dangerously high.

They did give me a shot in the stomach of a blood thinner, 2 ct scans(they actually sent the ct scans to Australia to be read since it was the middle of the night here but daytime there), chest xray (which showed nothing). Early next morning they took me for a MRI. Doc's came in and read MRI results and it showed a minor stroke. Which after worrying all night long about every other possibility actually became good news. It could have been much worse(tumor, cancer, disease etc.) Anyways I evaluated for balance and such and was let go by Monday. Went home rested and was back to work Tuesday. I still have a few small symptoms, a little light headed, if I turn my head to fast it lags a little. Kinda like having a few drinks. So I'm used to it. LOL. I would say I'm about 95% back to normal. (for whatever that is worth).

Anyways, that was my weekend.

One more thing, My son went 4-1 losing only in over time and had 2 pins. His team took 5th in the nation, going in unranked, beating 3 teams that were ranked in the top 10.

So all in all not a bad weekend

Good lord what a bunch of crocks we're all turning into. I hope someone's in the process of stabilizing your blood pressure.

You may pass on our congratulations to your son, that does sound an impressive achievement.

Sounds like some smart docs. My sister-in-law, a PA, says there are a lot of discussions going on about when to lower blood pressure by drugs.

Obviously, when you find yourself in the ER, you will be under stress, which will cause elevated BP. So docs are now thinking it best to get through the crisis, and take a look at the BP, later.

Sorry to hear about the adventure. Gratz to your son. that is quite an accomplishment.

Scary experience. I'm so glad you're feeling better & congrats to your son. You have given a lot of helpful information here---I never would have thought those symptoms were a stroke in progress.

Glad you're okay now, YZGI. As Tyr said, what's happening to us all :-5

And, as Anne said, useful to have the information on what you went through.

Congratulations on your son's achievements too :-6

The Doc explained the BP thing like this.

Since I had no history of high blood pressure they think that the blood pressure was the bodies way to help control the stroke by sending as much blood to the brain to possibly blow out a clot or plaque that may have started the stroke.

LarsMac;1444466 wrote: Yeah, and here I thought all along it was just the beer.

It felt almost exactly how it feels when drinking. I have plenty of experience. I may not have known it was a problem if I had been drinking much before it happened. I hadn't had any alcohol for 2 days before I made the drink and sat down that night. I am sure others experience is much different and it depends on where in the brain it is occurring.

Did I forget to mention I am only 54 years old? Quite the wake me up.

Yea!! It's only a stroke.

Thanks for the congrats, I was very proud of him. He had immediate success during his first 2 years of college wrestling earning all american honors his red shirt freshman year. The last 2 years have been rough with injuries and having a hard time losing the weight. This year he decided to hell with losing so much weight. It seems to have reinvigorated him a bit and is looking like his old self again. Again thanks.

Glad you made it through okay ... when you stop being a YZGI, that's when you need to worry. I assume there is a follow-up appointment or tests?

Yeah Monday I go to my GP.

The therapist that checked me out to see if I could go home didn't have the same humor as me. She said she has to give me these test to see if I could leave and I told her "hell its just like being drunk I reckon I'll pass with flying colors". When I looked back at her it was like looking into the eyes of one of those wooden Indians outside a cigar store. My wife chirped in that I may be the only one who actually get my jokes.

Glad you're ok now, must have been scary at the time, my brother has had two mini strokes in the last two years and is now on medication for life to prevent any more. Scary thing for him is he works in a hospital and had both episodes whilst at work. He answered a phone call at the desk in front of three nurses and other staff, he couldn't find the right words he needed to say and was stammering and stuttering, the nurses laughed and asked what he'd had to drink and could they have some. Not one of them thought it odd behaviour, which it was for him! Luckily he saw his GP the same day as the second episode and was sent for immediate testing.

Congrats to your son :-6

I'm happy your brother is ok. Yeah it was scary, you lay for for hours between tests and consider which problem you will end up with, knowing if nothing else it would probably be a life changer.

I do !!!!!

Some of them.....

First I thought it was a travelog, then I thought this place is turning into Emergency Ward 10, then I thought you was after some of my action.

You can have it all mate........

Hope your health scheme covers it......(damn I got serious.)

Nice to hear it turned out better than it started.

Hope it is easily manageable, especially in such a youngster.

And congratulations to the boy.......whatever you was talking about.

LOL, you make me laugh dude. Thanks.

About the health insurance. I had a $150.00 co-pay that we paid soon after arriving. I then think I have a deductible of $1500.00, not sure Cindy usually handles these things. Then I think they pay 80% of the remaining bill. I figure it will end up costing me between $2000.00 - $3000.00 for the time in hospital. Then I'll have to pay co pays when I go to my GP plus what ever my meds end up costing. Oh well I reckon I'll have some tax write offs at the end of the year.I'll let you know what it ends up costing, and I have what would be considered pretty good health coverage.

Thats the sort of adventure you could do without mate but you're right, it'll be a life changer...for the better. You'll be looking after yourself a little better no doubt and everyone else will to.

Great achievement by your son too. Does he grab you round the neck and give your head one of those knuckle rubs, like dads do to sons.....lol

His father died at 54; I had stage 3 cancer at 54---

Michael Landon, Peter Sellers, John Ritter, Robert Palmer, Lynn Thigpen---etc., people my son was aware of. Oddly enough, in the years following my husband's death, the number 54 would appear suddenly in the background of movie scenes & other unexpected places. 54 is an atomic number, which means nothing to me but my son is a physicist. My mother, his grandmother, died at 12:54 pm.

I'm sorry to hear that. Good luck to you. I was hoping this was just a sign to me to slow the hell down and quit taking things so serious. I get pretty stressed about business sometimes. I used to have a couple of drinks after work to chill out. Now I'm scared to even think of having a drink.
