That drawing reminds me of the Old Los Angeles Zoo.

These 'caves' had bars to keep the animals in. Since then, the 50's Things vastly improved for the animals, though I miss feeding the elephants peanuts.

BTW, elephants were not in caves behind bars.

That's a wonderful pic... Thank you...

I remember the very first time my parents took me to London Zoo when I was a kid. Even then aged around 7 years old, I remember hating It. I still to this day remember the Polar Bear In a concrete small enclosure with a ridiculously small pool. He was pacing up and down soooo bored. I cried... It haunted me to this day. Then I cried at people teasing the monkey's.... needless to say, my parents never asked If I wanted to go again... that's why the childs picture in my OP struck such a cord with me.

I know we have come a long way since then and we need Zoo's for conservation.

That's a great note from the child Oscar. I think most children feel that way about zoos.

The first places I head for are zoos and aquariums when visiting a new city. But, I have mixed feelings about these places. I love, love, love to see the animals up close, but also feel that they'd be better off and free on their own turf.

My first childhood experience at a zoo was the Bronx Zoo in New York. What a treat!!

I lived in the Bronx till I was almost four. We went to the zoo almost every weekend. My sister named 2 llamas & they would rush to the fence when they saw her coming! I loved to see the animals & learned to love & respect animals from going to the zoo. Only as an adult did I begin to see the negatives.

Lovely pictures Kathy.

When I was a little older about 10 I think,

My parents had a chalet bungalow on the cliffs at Brixham, Torbay, Devon that we used for holidays. Across the bay In Paignton lived the Lioness who played the part of Elsa the Lioness In the film Born Free.

My Father had taken me to see the film at which I cried again so every time we went to the bungalow for a break the first thing I demanded was to go see Elsa In the Zoo. She actually had a lovely enclosure as I remember It as a child but I'd spend much time just gazing at her there.
