Boyfriend tackles burglar while girlfriend holds shotgun, calls cops

EUGENE, Ore. - A Eugene couple caught a burglar in the act and made a citizens arrest with a shotgun early Sunday morning, Eugene Police said.

Derek LeBlanc was headed to work around 5 a.m. Sunday when he saw a pair of feet hanging out the shattered rear window of his pickup truck parked at his north Eugene home on Kenmore Street.

"At this point I had my car keys in my hand. I threw them, and as soon as he got to his feet I just instinctively took him down," LeBlanc said. "You never know what you're going to do until it happens, but I sure as hell wasn't going to be a victim."

After he tackled a man in his front driveway, LeBlanc said he began calling to his girlfriend for help.

Eugene Police later identified the man LeBlanc tackled to be Shawn Daniel Johnson.

Heidi Lusk, LeBlanc's girlfriend, said she came outside with a shotgun and a phone. She said she pointed the shotgun at Johnson with one hand and called police with the other.

"He said shoot me. He must have heard me tell dispatch that I had a shot gun pointed at him," said Lusk. "He asked me to shoot him, and I told him he wasn't worth shooting."

Nearly six minutes later Eugene Police responded and took Johnson into custody.

He was charged with unlawful entry into a motor vehicle, theft in the third degree, possession of burglary tools and possession of marijuana.

He was let out of Lane County Jail a few hours later in a capacity-based release.

While Leblanc's fast actions helped police capture Johnson, Eugene Police Lieutenant Doug Mozan said that these situations can get a lot more complicated if a gun is fired.

"I certainly appreciate a person that has the courage to take on danger. At the same time, a lot of prudence goes a long way," said Lt. Mozan.

Leblanc told KVAL News that he plans to start a neighborhood watch on his street.

Far as I know there is no law against suicide, therefore no crime.

Since we are on the subject of "Since Newtown", this may be interesting.

Newtown sees jump in gun permit applications

Applications for gun permits have jumped in Newtown, Conn., since a school massacre there revived the national debate on gun control and led to worries about new restrictions.

Newtown in recent years has issued about 130 gun permits annually. Police say the town received 79 permit applications in the three months since the Dec. 14 massacre, well over double the normal pace.

Robert Berkins, records manager for Newtown police, says many applicants are expressing concerns that their gun rights will be taken away.

Firearms sales have surged around the country, driven by Washington's new focus on gun control.

The killing of 20 first-graders and six staff members at Newtown's Sandy Hook Elementary School has led to proposals for universal background checks and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

Nobody should be surprised. As the extremists take advantage of dead children to promote their anti-2nd Amendment agenda, citizens in Newtown react just like the rest of America.

I thought THE Context was death by shooting.

I am sure if the guns were not in the equation the average person wouldn't or couldn't plunge a knife or bludgeon with a blunt instrument to accumulate such a total.

I think that's true. I don't know of anyone convicted of suicide. Attempted suicide might be another matter, but I'd recommend pleading not guilty due to insanity. That might fly. Conspiracy to commit suicide would be an interesting trial do jury duty for.

For people with no empathy, i.e. Senator Rob Portman, the only way they will see reason is when their own young children, or grandchildren, are mercilessly gunned down.

The Honorable Senator from Ohio couldn't care less about the rights of gay people, openly fought any ideas to the contrary. Now that his own son is gay, it's a different story. Just like assault weapons. It should only happen to them. Guess life isn't fair. We all know that.

Guns are tools. It is no shock to me that a gun would be an effective tool for suicide. A rational argument is the ease of using a gun many contribute to the number of suicide deaths.

Now consider

Suicide by: Males (%) Females (%)

Firearms 56 30

Suffocation 24 21

Poisoning 13 40

NIMH · Suicide in the U.S.: Statistics and Prevention

Now consider Japan where for the most part guns are not available to the average person.

SUICIDE IN JAPAN EXCEEDS 30,000 FOR 14TH YEAR.

My whole point is there is a distinction between suicide and homicide.

I think that is what I meant, a gun is pretty much an easier and spur of the moment aid to suicide, if the person had to weigh the alternatives it might, just might , deter them.

The Japanese culture is far different to the US, I suspect that what gives them such high rates.

I know the distinction between murder and suicide, but the availability of firearms and the ease of use can only result in high incidents of mortality by gun shot as opposed to any other weapon.

I love how shallow people are sometimes. "It must have something to do with color-codes, otherwise it might make my head hurt." That's not directed at you, Bruv. You're not the one that did the research.

If the racist who did the story wanted to be thorough, he'd show stats of rural vs urban blacks, rural vs urban whites, urban whites vs urban blacks, & rural whites vs rural blacks. Maybe he could have stratified the data by annual income, family status, or any number of actually valid criteria ... but that would risk shaking his color-coded preconceptions.

What's interesting and frightening is that there are people who want to restrict firearms who read such a story, and it doesn't even occur to them to question the conclusions; and there are also those who are afraid to examine their support of gun ownership who will either call it all a lie (which it is not, strictly), or find some other excuse to justify the color-coding - thus tacitly supporting the color-coding.

Police say Kevin Wayne Chapman and April Lynn Stewart had planned to rob a retired D.C. police officer at his home. According to the Calvert County Sheriff's Office, the two started banging on the front door around 10:30 p.m. and were greeted by the retired officer armed with a handgun.

When the suspects made aggressive movements, the retired officer fired shots, fatally striking Chapman. Stewart fled in a vehicle and was found at Chapman's home Monday and charged with armed robbery.

Police say Chapman had previously worked for a service company that performed work at the retired officer's home.

Westbank store owner shoots armed robber

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says an armed robber is in the hospital in critical condition after a foiled robbery attempt at a Westbank restaurant.

According to JPSO spokesman Col. John Fortunato, a suspect entered a sandwich shop on Barataria just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Fortunato says the suspect came in through a back door and was armed with a shotgun.

Police say the robber first pointed his shotgun at an employee cleaning the business and ordered the employee to the front of the business. The store owner heard the commotion and looked around the corner to find the suspect pointing the shotgun at him, according to investigators.

As the robber turned to move toward the owner, witnesses say the employee began struggling with the robber over the shotgun. As the struggle ensued, the store owner armed himself with a handgun and began firing at the suspect, according to police.

Fortunato says the suspect fled out the back door and was later found lying near the rear of the restaurant. The suspect was taken to a local hospital with several gunshot wounds, and remains in critical condition.

The employee who struggled with the robber was also shot in the arms. Fortunato tells WWL First News that the store owner in all likelihood hit the employee as he was firing at the robber. The employee was not seriously injured by the gunfire and was treated and released from a local hospital, according to Fortunato.

Robber shot dead by would-be victim outside Ft. Worth store

FORT WORTH, Texas -

A would-be robber was shot dead by a person with a concealed handgun license outside a Metro PCS store in the 7400 block of Wichita St. in Ft. Worth on Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators say Desmond Paige, 20, tried to rob a man using Craigslist. The would-be victim brought his gun to the sale just in case.

The man with the CHL was shot in the arm and the hand by the robber, but Paige was shot multiple times in the chest.

Paige died at the scene.

"When I got over to him I saw that he was bleeding out of his mouth and his chest. So I kneeled down next to him just to say you know hey I'm here you know, hold on. The ambulance and police are coming," said one witness.

Paige claimed on Cragslist he had a cell phone to sell. Police said when Paige tried to rob the man, the man pulled his gun and shot Paige several times.

Paige was recently released from prison after serving time for a violent crime and was on parole.

You, as I said before cling on to a post by Salon.com regarding deaths by firearm without context. My posts are to put firearm deaths in perspective.

I find it truly chickenchit to jump on the tragedy at Sandy Hook to promote your agenda. As it is a count since then.

The FBI keep count of all deaths due to firearms, without the help of Salon.com.

We already know what to expect.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of two Boston Bomber suspects was counted. At least Salon/Slate seemed to get that one on their count.
