The thread on match collections raises an interesting question:

What do you think that people will collect from our era?

We don't have cool matches since smoking isn't cool anymore. What do we see day-to-day now that would interest collectors of the future? I know I'd like to have one of those old-timey computers with the green screen and keyboard all in one unit.



... but I can't imagine somebody having a collection of laptops.

Perhaps cell phones?

I've kept my first ever cell/mobile phone (along with the credit card size sim ), in a vague hope that someone in the future might crave a little nostalgia..... and some exercise. Its not one of those "brick" phones but it was as basic as they come. Battery life was 8 hours if you didnt use it

It would look great right next to the rotary phone and black-&-white TV with the rabbit ears. :wah:

Maybe the old Add-a-Bead necklaces that were so popular a few years back. Not the cheap plastic knock-offs but then again maybe they'd have a kitschy appeal too!

I recently obtained an old PC, I am not really into old PC's, and it's tucked away somewhere now, but from memory it was an Amstrad all in one type thing, with a flip up monitor.

I immediately took a look on Ebay thinking I had happened upon a fortune, but they are ten a penny.

TV program had a bit about first edition books and amazingly Harry Potter's first was more valuable then James Bond or Sherlock Holmes.

Both were predictably going to sell well, being from well established authors, Harry Potter was the first and a limited print, so came from nowhere.

I have my 1986 PacTel Mobile cell phone, the handset and little

curlicue antenna.

I did think of starting a collection of grocery store paper bags,

especially the 'holiday' versions, the change in art styles over the

years is pretty neat to see, and NOBODY collects THOSE... but it

gets just too out of hand too quickly. And they wouldn't be worth

very much ever, I'm sure.

A lot of the things that you could think to save that from the

1950's to now are pretty pricey aren't as much from NOW to

2975, there's usually just waaay too many manufactured.

Not worth very much?? That's not why you kept the matches, are they? I think a bag collection might be pretty neat. At least you'd have a ready way to store them. :yh_wink

I didn't keep the matches to make money off them, no.

With those it was sort of just little mementos of different

experiences, even if it was only a dinner or something.

The other thing is thinking of who might want to get all this

'junque' after I'm gone. Highly doubt a museum would want

grocery bags!

:yh_youkid You can always find somebody who would find things like that interesting. For cryin' out loud, some people collect bottle caps! I have a coworker that collects aluminum cans from around the world. Another lady I know has a skirt made from license plates. (she wears it occasionally when she goes square dancing. I told her once she just likes showing off her bumpers. )

I thought , after the event that glass Milk Bottles might have been a thing to save.

They went from big chunky recyclable things to thin dumpy bottles, now milk is sold in plastic or card.

I came to that conclusion independently, I honestly never knew people collected them.

As a kid our milk was always delivered in big long bottles, some had the company printed in coloured paint on the side some had company embossed in the glass.

At the time the change over to little dumpy bottles, due to energy saving, I thought we would never see the big ones again, and thought it might be worth saving a few........glad I am not so fanatical as that bloke though.



So how about old fashioned filament light bulbs ?
