Heads up, ForumGarden is going down for a half hour, on the hour

It's Monday 29th October 2012 at 20:35 GMT+0.

In 25 minutes I'm taking the site offline for a half hour. Go and make tea, find a biscuit, do whatever you do with a cat, ring a friend if you've got one.

We shall return.

Okay, it's back. I might slightly load the system for the next few minutes so if it feels slow that's temporary.

Your bringing the tone down, you mean. Having another go indeed. Think you can last half an hour ?

It's been so long since I last tried that I can't really recall. I'm sure I had more memory back then and a longer default timeout on my access point.

I cheated slightly, I had to raise the sensitivity threshold to meet the deadline. Other than that I think we're just about recovering.

Okay, FG...........I came to Forum Garden today and all the videos I have recently posted have disappeared from my threads. What's up with that?

Never mind. I just went back and the videos were there.

Ahoy shipmates,

I'm not exactly sure when, but I'm taking the site offline in the next day or so.

I'll give a good half-hour's warning and again I'll take the site down on the hour. This post is a warning that the site might be down without you seeing the immediate notice. If you find it that way, try again after half past.

If I do need longer I'll try to say so before starting.

That, for the moment, is now done.

The site's host will be using a similar slot in a few days, I'll post notification.

Today we may yoyo a little, the revised host should be taking over the site. When I think it's completed I'll update this thread.

I'm adding details here so Bryn can see them, he's a bit peripatetic today.

Fashions come and go. When ForumGarden started in 2004 there was email, ICQ, IRC and special interest forums. Since then most users have added (and often abandoned) MSN, AOL Instant Messenger, Skype, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, SnapChat, Viber, Reddit, the list could go on a lot further. What the site exists for at the moment is probably for members to come back to when they have a need to, and as an archive of what was said back in the day. We've never focused on any specialism, we've always been a purely social site, what remains is a scattered membership who'd not be able to re-engage with everyone else if the site were no longer online. I think that's a good reason to stay open.

You might find that the system has forgotten which threads you've red and which are still unred. The reason is that you may have red them on the old host while the ne3w host was being synchronized, or maybe it's a cookie issue. It won't affect future posts, it's a consequence of the upgrade.

eta: we cross-posted, this isn't about groups.

I can't tell either, but it's not going to work if it's left unmended.

My first look at a thread had forgotten but I took that to be because I was coming from an old search. All OK since then.

Well, when I logged in I could read posts, but when I replied, the post did not show up after re-reading the thread.

I logged out, and was still able to re-post to the same thread, but it never showed up, and the earlier post also was not there.

I showed as present in the thread, but no new posts were there.

Logged out again, and back in, now both posts showed up.

A bit weird.

Coming back after a while out New Posts showed me a list of threads. After looking at the new posts in those threads clicking on New Posts still shows me the same list of threads.

Clicking on one of the threads I've read takes me to the last post in the thread, not the first of the new posts from the first time in.

OK, ten minutes later they've disappeared from the list of threads with new posts.

I can see the effect. Clicking reload clears it, so I think there's a cache issue. I still have access to the old host, I'll try to find cache directives in the Apache configurations. We stepped up from Apache 1 to 2 so it's quite likely.

Still some sort of problem, this post came up after clicking "Todays posts"

After clicking and visiting a post under "New posts" it remains in the list after another search.

Possibly one click late in registering the change? When I logged in it came back with the screen as per logged out, when I then clicked on Today's Posts it came back with today's posts but with the screen as per logged in.

Not that it will make much practical difference but the new environment appears to by running about five times faster than the old one.

Clearing the cache allowed me to log in cleanly but it still does not register posts having been read immediately, they go from the new posts lists after about quarter of an hour.
