Around a quarter of mobile phone towers in the ten East-coast states hit by Hurricane Sandy have been damaged or destroyed, the Federal Communications Commission has said. The FCC is anticipating continued communication problems as other towers are running on backup power.

Chonsi, Aussie Pam & Oscar and whoever else..so far in Kathy Ellen's town, there is no electric and no way to get onto the island unless you stayed there to ride it out. The governor issued a mandatory evacuation for all shore points up & down the Atlantic coast. Almost half the shore towns are still under water but I'm sure we will all hear from KE soon.

Thanks Ducks... I was guessing It was a case of lack of power. If she contacts any of us, she'll contact you first so I'll wait until you get some news.

There seems to be concern about water pollution, along with extensive toxic holding pond breaches. http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/82 ... EY=1260075 discusses them. Environmental concerns don't seem to have as much profile as they might in other countries.

Are you implying, that if a similar hurricane, storm, act of mother nature etc. etc. were to occur in the UK that no toxic waste would get where it wasn't supposed too?

It's the difference between one sewage plant overspilling in Gloucester and ten eastern states with no effective storm-water drainage. The UK has comparatively effective storm protection because we choose to fund it adequately out of national taxation.

Thanks Erica - I'm glad you're okay. Ditto the poster from Brooklyn. As Erica says, I'm sure Kathy Ellen will get word to her friends one way or another as soon as she can. In the meantime, let's keep her and all those others who've had their lives turned upside down by this disaster in our thoughts and prayers.

A literal washout. Lost power from Monday through to last night. I am on the 4th floor & couldn't tell the height of the water rushing below, but found out it was four feet high! All basements flooded, windows of businesses blown out, many places facing the Bay will be out for a long time--floor to ceiling flooding. The following photos are from my neighborhood blog (award winning!) SheepsheadBites.

Is that what caused that horrendous fire? It's weird how flooding seems to cause huge fires like that.

Thanks flop. You'll be proud to know I behaved like an adult & was calm & mature. Luckily, I have a transistor radio. I spent my teen years with one glued to my ear, so it was not only informative, but a great friend! Don't forget to own one, just in case. Whew! I'm so glad electricity is back on. No heat though, & the temps are........too cold! I have no idea when we will get heat back.

The one in Breezy Point, the Rockaways. That is so unbelievable horrible, only the foundations are left. I don't know what caused that fire. I'm amazed I heard of no deaths in that. The beach I go to in summer is across from Breezy Point. Beautiful view. All summer their beach was being dredged, new sand brought it, I watched the whole project. Now it's gone, of course. The majority of the residents are cops, firepeople, emt's. While their own homes burnt most of them were fighting fires elsewhere. Devastating.

I know exactly how you feel.... the night of the hurricane on the South Coast of England was frightening for me. The noise of the roof tiles smashing to the ground and the darkness made me feel we were under attack.

The photos I've seen of collapsed buildings all seem to indicate a wooden construction. Is that accurate? Does it sound flimsier than their location might warrant?

A lot of the destruction is in older areas where the buildings we never designed to deal such weather.

And yes, mostly wood frame housing built in the mid 20th century.

The photos gave no indication that for the area concerned there was much of a choice in the matter. I'm always prepared to be corrected, mind.

A lot of it looked quite unlike timber, more like ply or chipboard. Again, I'm prepared to be corrected. The posts left standing were quite likely timber.

Chances are that most of those homes were built long before the current residents began occupying them.

As the homes are rebuilt they will hopefully be constructed by more adequate standards and materials. It only makes sense given their placement.

Had the photos accompanied an account of storm damage to the coast of Cameroon I'd not have been surprised. The idea that they represented the US Eastern seaboard is tragic.
