When you are paying for a purchase with cash and use more than one denomination of bill, do you hand the cash to the cashier with the higher value bill on bottom or on top?

Example: If I'm paying for something that costs $27, I'll hand the cashier a $20, a $5 and (2) $1s. They will be layered with the twenty on bottom followed by the five and the two ones on top.

My mother does it the opposite way. She invariably has the larger denomination bill on top with the order in reverse.

I always attributed her tendency to do things in reverse to her being left handed and all of the thought processes that are usually associated with it. :sneaky:

How do you do it? :-3

Same way as you, and I'm left handed ;)

It all depends on whether my wallet is organized or not. Then it depends on whether I have too many smaller bills that I'd like to unload. So I guess for me it is relatively random.

Hmmm. I give the money separately. If it's $27. first I give a twenty, then a five, then two twos (which you can also wear, I think :-) ).

Hi Tabby,

You always come up with such great questions...Thank you!!

I'm ocd a bit so I try to be organized. My wallet is always organize with the bills neatly placed in the smallest denominations to the largest. I'm right handed.

I always hand the cashier all of the money together from smallest to largest amount.

I rarely use cash, and do not think of the order when using it. I just make sure it is the right amount.

Larger bill on the bottom of the stack for me, always.

then if there's a odd amount of change - I dig that up last.

When money is given back - the cashier counts coin back 1st - then small bills to large.

so I suppose that's why the large bill is on the bottom.?

Now the problem is finding a cashier that can count out the return.?

I just give them the largest bill I have and let them make change.

When I do have alot of cash in my wallet, I do keep it organized. After a cashier hands me my change back, I tend to just stuff it in my wallet, so I do have to organize regularly.

I don't pay much attention to the order of the bills when I pay.

I never put money in my wallet.

Only ID and cards.

My money is stacked by denomination and then folded in half with large bills inside.

Not so fast & not so clever. Two twos would overpay by 2 bucks as that adds up to $29. It's a draw however because I would be cutely dressed for the season. :wah:

I put the largest size wise on the bottom does tend to be the highest denomination

Reminds me of a scene from one of those gangster movies where a guy (undercover cop, I think) explained that real gangsters only carry money in a roll bound with a rubber band, with the twenty on the outside.
