The cost of actually making an iPhone is more than £300 less than the retail price.

It's that whatisname from beyond the grave - damn my memory fades sometimes... umm... thin scabby salesman fellow, about as trustworthy as last week's fish. No, it's gone.

But what he said was, in effect, charge more and people will want it more. Selling sausages gets you a trivial markup, but you can sell the sizzle for whatever you want to charge.

My eight year old samsung is showing signs of packing in. I've seen a phone for £15 so I will probably just go for that. You know you can get one with a camera?

Over the last couple of years my wife has had major problems finding good paying work. She stumbled upon an opportunity buying and selling goods. She buys an item and sells it for a profit of anywhere from 200% to 6000%. I kid you not.

Last week she made $1800 and change. It goes up and down but she never loses. Don't ask me questions, it's uberancientchinesetopsecret. Get your own gold mine.

It's amazing what people will buy. Funny thing is that I have not bought very few new things in almost 10 years. This computer was one of them.

Of rather more concern is how much longer you'll be able to buy one without. A phone with a camera is a stupid thing to hand to a child still attending school, it may have little value but it has the potential to cause a great deal of harm.

The cost of all Apple products is extortionate. I detest them for it. Hate itunes too. Wont have anything to do with it/them

The other main players in the phone industry do it just as well, if not better, for much less. My first mp3 player, about 10 years ago, was a Creative. I think it's a British company. About the size of one of them old portable cd players but it worked perfectly and was very reasonably priced compared to an ipod

If that's the Creative Jukebox 3, I still run one of those. Wonderful piece of kit. Creative were the people who came out with the Soundblaster back in the late 80s which pretty much defined sound cards. They tried to look American but they were a back-yard Singapore start-up which kept its nerve and came good.

I bought several Jukeboxes for various people, all off eBay, I never paid more than £75 for one. Built to survive, those things. The one I use now went round the world in Rosamond's backpack after several years of school trips.

Retail price being the operative term here. Who pays retail for a phone?

Yep thats the one. I loved it and would still use it had it not met with a tragic and fatal accident. I still have it but the screen looks like its had ink spilt over it

Most folks get their phone with a signed contract with the carrier.

I can get an iPhone from ATT for $100 if I sign a 2-year contract.

Over the course of the contract, they will make plenty, but, obviously, they are not paying Apple $600 or $700 for the phone.

We all do. They don't give them away, we pay by way of monthly tariffs. Those that want a sim free phone usually have to pay the full retail price as a whole

You're paying the same monthly fee regardless what phone you have. If you want a sim free phone and don't want to pay Apple's outrageous full retail price, get a Razr or Galaxy S III for... about the same price as an iPhone 4S.

They are, I fear, not the same things.

If you know of any iPhone handset tariff which sums to less than the retail price of the iPhone over the minimum life of the contract, do tell what and where. I've never seen one.

What a carrier charges and what it costs the carrier to make connections and transfer data aren't the same things either.

Phones are entertainment units now. Angry Birds, internet access, music storage (replaces iPod) facebook updates, a few of my coworkers watch tv or youtube shows on their lunch breaks.

They're the cheapest form of status symbol recognized universally across the planet. It used to be a Mercedes convertible with leather trim.

My htc is a phone, a camera, a video camera, a sat nav, an mp3 player ( I have 50 albums downloaded on to it and can stream live, ie via spotify) a radio, a games consul, a web surfing tool, it has access to thousands of different applications, one of which, can recognise any music played (or hummed) and deliver every piece of information about it. Another allows me to point my phone into the sky to show my grandchildren where the planets and star systems are. I can check my emails on the move. It updates the weather to my precise position. I get live updates on the football and cricket scores and can even stream live Sky Sports News

They are remarkable tools, whether you use them for work or entertainment but they can be a distraction

I have a smart phone, androids work just as well at a better price. The apple is just a status symbol, and it doesn't impress me.......

It kind of depends on what one wants out of a phone. The Androids and iPhones both impress me in different ways. Neither as a status symbol. Oh, hey, look at me, I have an iPhone, just like my neighbor's ten year old kid.

Here we are - Why is the iPhone so successful? 'Cause people love 'em • The Register

Check the user satisfaction bar-chart."For the eighth consecutive study, Apple ranks highest among manufacturers of smartphones in customer satisfaction," wrote the satisfaction-surveying statisticians at J.D. Power when announcing their findings. And it wasn't even close. "Apple achieves a score of 849 and performs well in all factors, particularly in physical design and ease of operation," they noted. "HTC (790) follows Apple in smartphone rankings."

Apple users, on the whole, do tend to be a little over the top in their support for the product. They go to extraordinary lengths when a new product is released in a new colour, or 2mm thinner and queue up all night to pay a fortune for it. They're like boy band fans

But much to Microsoft's dismay Linux happened to take hold. So I expect the same sort of eventual, albeit slow, decline for Apple.

Out of 10 in my immediate family, including son/daughter in-laws, there are 3 Android phones; 1 blackberry and 6 iphones. i switched out of Apple for a Samsung Galaxy S3 and I'm happy I did. I'll actually get to have control over my phone once I root it and turn it into a Linux device like it should be.

That said, I did like my iphone before I knew better, but wouldn't you know it, Apple is attempting to get my phone recalled and taken out of circulation because the greedy bastards are going through their gluttonous stage before the fall begins...just like Microsoft.
