Back when there were mostly steam trains I used to pass the newly-built Jodrell Bank Observatory on the line between Manchester and Crewe, going on holidays and coming back. It was an inspiring sight and Bernard Lovell was the public voice of radio astronomy. He had the local accent from round Kingswood way, where I come from, which was unusual to hear on the radio back then. I remember travelling to Manchester in the sixties to hear him give a public lecture on what the Observatory had achieved and what known puzzles were still to resolve.
An inspiring life backed by solid achievement.

That he should have built a fixed dish of nearly that size from his own resources and then been lambasted for the "waste of money" in building Jodrell Bank speaks volumes about the mentality of the times.
A truly great man whose legacy will live forever.
