There's never been much said about the English Variation of the Theatre of The Absurd but I'd say that was what he took out in public and amused passers-by with. Not many others could get away with it. That Peruvian chap had a touch of the same. It hasn't the blatancy of Goondom - or even Bentine a lot of the time, to be honest. It's an unexpressed assumption about other people and Sykes did it as much with silence as with words, not a bad skill for someone who wrote scripts.

I used to love Eric Sykes and Hattie Jacques together, when I was young.

Hadn't a clue. I'm fairly confident I've never been in a room where a TV was displaying her image, I'm certain I was ignorant of the fact if it did actually happen. What I know today comes from seeing her Wikipedia page yesterday. Northern Irish, born Mary 72 years ago, broadcasted sporadically on daytime television when she was younger.
Eric Sykes, on the other hand, impressed and entertained me.
