I don't have HBO on my cable connection, so I rented DVD's of the first four episodes of this new Western Series. Now I have no problem with profanity when I know it's being used by people that would actually talk that way, but I have a hard time believing that everyone in the Old West would use f--k, and mother f-----, coc--ck-- et al on a regualr basis, if at all. Anyone else see this show. Is it just my sensibilites that are being invaded?

no not at all, there is such an over use of those words because we have become numb to them. I think it is garbage that we have to believe they are the way of any era period.

Might not have used those words but probably used equivalents. Swearing can become such a habit it becomes verbal punctuation rather than swearing, all it takes sometimes is one dominant character who is an habitual swearer.

Give you an example from my experience, warehouse, the checking in clerkess was complaining to the shop steward about the foul language habitually used by the warehousemen-effen was a type of forklift as in take the effen forklist and move that effen pallet if you get my drift.

Shop steward-also-female had difficulty taking the complaint seriously as most of the men would not swear with a woman present and ceased when any other woman was there-it was uncool to swear wioth women present but simply the clerkess was just seen as one of the guys, but as a result the steward had never heard the kind of language causing the complaint. Easily resolved it had just become an unconscious habit. Once it was pointed out most of them were embarrassed and stopped.

Ever seen trainspotting? Believe me I know guys use that kind of languageall the time in their own circles. Have fallen in to the habit nyself on occassion.

As a side note the above is a peculiarly american variant-don't ask me why I have no opinion on the matter.

I asked my mom - what her family use to say when they would get mad......

Wh0re was the worst one she could think of..and that was when her grandma was really mad at another..(I thought that was pretty naughty) She said her grandpa use to say Damn a lot but NEVER God D....and NEVER F$%#@

I totally endorse what you say. Obviously, certain types of people would always use and have used this type of "industrial language" but to put it into the mouths of these characters seems merely gratuitous!
