There has only ever been the Google option for searches on my PC, but lately they seem to be taking over the internet, and my searches are becoming more and more personally directed, and I don't like it.
Is there any other decent alternatives ?

I have to agree with you.
Do you get those annoying pop up's when searching also?
For example.... If I have googled Turkey at some point, I will then get holidays In Turkey popping up for a week.

whose claim to righteousness is that they do not track your search patterns for any reason.
I have added it to my Bookmarks toolbar and will be trialing it with Bing and Dogpile, that is a new one to me.... Thanks

I didn't think so since there are a number of articles comparing the two.

Sorry, I'm out of date :-
Originally, none of the actual web crawling and storage/retrieval of data was done by Yahoo! itself. In 2001 the searchable index was powered by Inktomi and later was powered by Google until 2004, when Yahoo! Search became independent.
On July 29, 2009, Microsoft and Yahoo! announced a deal in which Bing would power Yahoo! Search.

More frightening than I thought.
How about a call for sanctions on Google usage ?
What if we all stopped using it ?

I am rapidly weaning myself off Google...........it's not easy.
Here are some of the reasons........
But there’s so much more that Google can do to help you by sharing more of your information with … well, you. We can make search better—figuring out what you really mean when you type in Apple, Jaguar or Pink. We can provide more relevant ads too. For example, it’s January, but maybe you’re not a gym person, so fitness ads aren’t that useful to you. We can provide reminders that you’re going to be late for a meeting based on your location, your calendar and an understanding of what the traffic is like that day. Or ensure that our spelling suggestions, even for your friends’ names, are accurate because you’ve typed them before.
Log into any of their 'services' and they have you logged..........and no I don't think I am paranoid
