Of all the museums that you’ve visited, which one do you consider your favorite? I started to ask “Which do you consider the best?” but that not really what I’m after with this post. Best can be too relative to pin down so let’s go with your favorite. Which one did you enjoy the most?

For me, it was the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier at Pamplin Park Historical Park in Dinwiddie County, Va. Our visit was several years ago and it still holds rank with me for pure fun, entertainment, education, emotion and awareness. The entire battlefield park is nice but the museum itself was the highlight. When you enter the building, you’re met with a wall of several hundred tintype soldier’s photos ... actual soldiers from both sides of the conflict ... some Union and come Confederate. Their lives prior to the war, during the war and beyond had been researched in order to make you a part of their personal experience. Each visitor chooses a soldier and receives a headphone set with a recording presented as him guiding you through the extensive museum displays, replicas of camps, medical treatments, conflicts, etc. I chose a young rebel soldier from a Shenandoah Regiment. It was very touching and made a terrible & devastating war seem as though it were a personal event right at the moment. After spending two hours with my escort through “his” war, I was about to discover at the end whether my soldier survived the war or not and you know what? At that very last pivotal moment, I took my headphones off. I couldn’t bring myself to hear it. It might have ended well but I know too much of the history to risk it ... what a wimp (me not him)!! I don’t remember “my” soldier’s name but I can still see his tintype in my mind and I hope he made it home to his family in 1864.

I’ve been to far grander & more well known museums but this one was the most interactive & fun. I passed by the park yesterday in my travels and it made me think back to the visit. Here’s a link ~~~~~> Pamplin Park

So ... what is your favorite museum? Why? Post a link so we can have a cyber visit at the very least!

I have quite a few favorites, but my favorite favorites must be: Musee du Louvre in Paris, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Tate Modern in London, British Museum in London, Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Undoubtedly Littledean Jail, the old combined police station, courthouse and jail in Cinderford. It's privately run and it has a startling series of collections each of which has an unfettered approach to education. Museums far grander could take lessons from the owner.

The Explora in Albuquerque. There's nothing like a hands on museum!
