Obama has announced that all US troops will withdraw from Iraq by the end of the year.
With the claim that the US has brought freedom to the people of Libya and taken out Bin Laden, Is this latest move just a bid for a second term ?

It will take a hell of a lot more than just bringing the troops home. It's the ECONOMY.

On the other hand he's been handed a gift horse by the Pentagon's intransigence. He said he'd bring them back and he'd managed to do it. Better late than not at all.
As for the economy, the question is which party will predominantly carry the blame in the mind of the electorate next year. It's monumentally screwed up, someone has to carry the can. I'm not convinced it'll be Obama though.

I think that's a reasonable assumption.

A further point.... was the race to get Bin Laden the excuse to withdraw from a war the US were not winning?

There is no way that freeing Libya will divert attention from the ECONOMY, the unemployed could care less, those facing mortgage foreclosure could care less, those that are barely making it financially week to week could care less, senior citizens with eroding savings could care less.

I am still in shock. I will believe this troop withdrawal when I see it in action. Talk is cheap...even from our President.
I don't believe Obama will be re-elected regardless.

What nobody is talking about is about roughly 10,000 American "contractors" that will remain behind. Mercenaries are what they're usually called. Who's paying them is another question, I read we gave 1.1 billion to Iraq this year so far. Don't worry, America is not going to really leave Iraq for a long time to come.
Yeah, this is just a ploy by Obama and his people. I think he will be re elected too, not that America will benefit. I'm also not going to blame him for the condition of this country, he's not the one who runs it. I place the blame squarely on the heads of the representatives of the American people and Americans themselves.

The date for US to extract combat troops from Iraq was determined a long time ago.
Until a few days ago, the US was attempting to convince Iraq to extend that date. Iraq refused. The troops have to leave.
Now everyone thinks the Pres is trying to take credit for bringing the troops home.
Bill Maher is right. the guy can't catch a break.

Obama's basically the janitor getting blamed for someone else's mess while trying futilely to clean it while the party is still going on.

I agree, SnoozeAgain with your comment. I wonder about him being re-elected but maybe something will happen with the economy to help him out.

Pre-election guff I recall hailed him as 'The New Messiah'... What was his pre-election slogan again? ' We are the one's we have been waiting for'.... Looks like we are still waiting then.

I think it's more along the lines of the pigeon hole the people have put him in, those around him and his followers. It's all part of the propaganda spewed by all sides.

It's all very well with the 'Yes, we can' until you have changed nothing and are looking for a second term. 'Yes, we can' can rouse the spirit of the disheartened until a few years later, when the disheartened have grown in numbers and spread a feeling of doom throughout the country.

They've been emasculated by being placed under the jurisdiction of the Iraqi courts, they can be arrested by the Iraqi police and they'll serve time in Iraqi jails if they so much as spit their wad on the sidewalk. They're armed nuns. The days when they could loose off a magazine at any passing family driving to the shops is long gone. If US tax money's going toward their pension funds then that's fine by me, that leaves less to spend on the unrestrainable killers, rapists, hoodlums and all-round jerks in the regular forces.
