Actually I think one has to. It's probably true about posting as well.

That chap has a great deal more charm and employability than I do.

This guy has been all over the press. He apparently has a drug and alcohol problem and has for a long time. He also has 9 freaking kids that probably grew up on welfare. He checked into rehab, he walked out and I don't know what he's doing now but I know I would have reservations about giving him a job. Some people are just self destructive and I don't think they can live decent lives in our society. It's not all the fault of these individuals, it's largely the fault of our society. I don't know what the solution to the problem is.

I do think we need to get them out of this rotten society, the media circus surrounding him was all about exploitation.

This video hit the US big time he has been on every major network, done voice for several companies, been reconnected with his family, Dr. Phil sent him to rehab, fixed his teeth and all free. He still struggles with the booze and haven't heard much in the news about him the last few week. Believe me he has been noticed. I did hear he left REHAB not sure why, he does have a drinking problem it is what lead to his homelessness. GREAT VOICE.

He was thrust so suddenly into the limelight that he probably couldn't handle it which made his addictions that much harder to resist. He's got a pretty lengthy criminal record as well, which doesn't say much for his mental health.

I don't mean to pick, Scrat, but when do you think individuals are responsible for their own actions? In many of your posts you seem to absolve individuals from any responsibility for their actions. Granted, some parts of our society suck, but where would you suggest individuals go to get out of this society?

I think the individual is ultimately responsible for his or her actions. I also believe in many cases there are mitigating circumstances. Some people are not able to resist (for whatever reason) things such as drugs, alcohol and all of these other vices our society offers and unfortunately their lives spin out of control.

Granted, some parts of our society suck, but where would you suggest individuals go to get out of this society?


I'm for tough love on this subject, no treatment and above all no prisons. We need to get them out of this society and preferably into a place where they can live better lives free of what is killing them. Out side of St Petersburg 5 years ago they started an experiment with mental patients. Authorities realized that being locked up in an institution that is much like a prison the people were not being helped. What they did was moved the people into one of the many abandoned hamlets in the area (along with supervisors) and gave them places to live largely as they wished. They grow their own gardens, collect their own wood for fuel and are allowed to go to other towns and even St Pete on supervised excursions to sell their goods to earn money. It seems to be working very well. It's certainly a better quality of life for the patients as they're not caged like animals and saves a lot of money.

To answer your question of where? The Altai Republic of Russia. I know I sure would like to live there. Just a thought.

then he admitted he wasn't ready for rehab and went back into a bottle.

Can't help those who are not willing to help themselves during the process.

Oh Scrat------------you and I dance to different orchestras ---- how about working to improve the society in which you live and not dreaming of re-locating to supposed ideal societies that tend to be transitory anyway?

What are we going to do? Prohibition? War on drugs? How about giving them all the booze and drugs they want, just sit them in a warehouse filled with the stuff. We've been working for a better society for god knows how long and where have we gotten? I think either my idea or just let them live their lives. It is after all their choice, just don't take money from all of us to incarcerate them and give them expensive treatments and all that crap. If people choose to go out with a bottle in their hand or a needle in their arm, that's their choice.

I'm essentially against that though. I've seen it in Moscow, the government there doesn't put a lot of money into these type social rehab programs. It's a pretty ugly situation all around. People do make their own choices.

I dont think so, I mean maybe it was exploitation for the media because thats what they do but people love to see a comeback. I know I was rooting for him.

As far as fault I dont look at it those terms exactly. Hes an alcoholic, doesnt much matter why he is but he is. Bottom line is he royally screwed up a shining opportunity. Alcoholism is like that though. Opportunities arent what get us better. What gets us better is the will to live. If hes not ready, the greatest job in the world wont help him. Society in my opinion has nothing to do with sobriety.

As for "the 1937 French film Pépé le Moko", I've subsequently seen it and it's immensely superior to the 1938 Carles Boyer remake, but I hadn't seen it when I was a lad. I'd not be surprised if that was available free on the Internet too. They're both well worth finding and watching.
