After getting stung by the US Administration so badly last year, BP has instead thrown itself wholeheartedly into developing fields controlled by the Russian Federation. To the extent of buying in with 5% of the company. That's a lot of chips.

This was coming regardless of what happened in the US and other parts of the world. If not BP then someone else.
BP is smart to take a chance on it also, the potential wealth of the Kara Sea and its proximity to the White Sea ports and the gas fields to the south in the northern Urals makes development of almost the entire north coast of European Russia a possibility in this next century.
I suggest the British politicians keep their yaps shut also.
I really liked this part too. Makes me wonder just what in the hell is going through peoples heads.
However in the US Congressman Edward Markey, who is leading Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee, called for a review of the deal by US regulators.

US Congresspersons will, one hopes, eventually realize they might as well boil their heads as call for a review of the deal by US regulators, it's none of their business. It's outside their remit. Their jurisdiction doesn't extend there. If they finally get that message perhaps they can pass it on to the Pentagon too.

Last I looked the Arctic oil rights were under debate as to who could claim them. Russia won? They don't do that often anymore.

Perhaps the Americans haven't quite realized that yet, hence the huffing and puffing from Washington.

I didn't expect Canada had a chance. We're too preoccupied clubbing seals.

You don't need all that under-the-ice oil, you've got... umm...
Wood. You've got lots of wood.

That's right. And the Americans owe us a heck of a lot in unjustified tariffs on it.

This deal concerns basically the Kara Sea basin. it's Russian turf. What is disputed is further north towards the pole. Archangelsk, Komi, Nenetsia and Yamalia are the oblasts on the northern coast of Russia that will benefit most as their infrastructures will get the biggest boosts. The Kara sea basin is basically a stones throw from all of these places. Check it out on Google Earth.
Even if the area can be disputed for some reason just what is anyone going to do about it? I'm sure the Swedes, Finns and Norwegians will. If Canada is smart about it and can keep the defense minister from peeing all over himself every time a recon Bear comes within 1000 miles of Hudson Bay you might be able to benefit from it also. A lot of countries and businesses see Russia as a friend and business partner, some still live in the past.

This is not likely. If your thoughts are correct then they will scream, it is after all their purpose in life. It could also be about BP selling off assets for what development they have in the Gulf of Mexico here. I don't think they want to deal with US regulators and environmentalists anymore. Russias not going to hassle them that much.
