Aerobic exercises like running, swimming, and biking burn a lot of calories while you're engaged in the activity. But the most important benefits of exercise occur after, not during, the session. This is what fitness experts refer to as the "afterburn" - the calories you burn in the hours and days after a workout. Research shows that the metabolic effect of aerobic exercise generally lasts for 30 minutes to an hour, while strength training can increase your caloric burn rate for as long as 48 hours.
