It's just that we havent had a government for some time now ....and it might be a good oportunity.............Although, what's really weird is, things havent run more smoothly.

It's like no one has noticed.

Roads are still being repaired and built , pensions are still being paid, Teh sun still rises over the horizon...........I could get to like this situation.

You'll see us rushing into the fires while others are running in the opposite direction. Afterward the event the previous fire fighters come back in to mop up.

So you're talking about first responce? Or strike teams? Been on both. There's been an incredible rush to train up crew leaders lately. Hey have you got any fire science books? I need to brush up.

I dispute that. Little fire, big fire, the principles are the same.

for instance, instead of flying planes chucking water over a forest on fire, why not fly planes chucking water over a forest before it catches on fire? You're not going to use any less water before or after the fact.

Yes you are because of the dryness of the forest. On a day of heat it would evaperate so quickly it would be useless and it's not that simple to suppose a fire will continue in the path of where you have just dumped any form of retardent.. We have an extremely dry heat here it's not like the tropics. And all the forests are tinder boxes. Just doesn't work that way . When I say Fire science, I mean fire behaviour in different conditions and terrain in different kinds of weather . There is a basic full proof understanding but i need more now.. All the books are being rewritten.

Oh and when water is dumped it's normally for asset protection not just dumping int he middle of forests. That's what the DSE is for.

OH btw...looks like Australia will have a goverment next week.

A lot of water dumped on a forest fire is wasted anyway as most of it evaporates before it hits the target.

Anyway, fair said. Protect your homes and assets first.

Keeping the forests damp would be a time consuming and repetitive task.

It doesn't evaperate becuase it has a retardent in it and the steam from dumping it on the fire creates a buffer for the immediate surrounding areas. Unless it's windy of course.

Do you know how big our forests are? Victoria alone is bigger than the UK including Nth Ireland and considering we have no idea where or when a fire is going to start and being in the driest continent in the world your idea is highly impractical.

The main role of a water bomber/tanker is to cool down the burning scrub via evaporative cooling. If you lower the temperature combustion will not occur. Remember the fire triangle of heat/fuel/oxygen - remove one or greatly reduce it and a fire cannot occur.

Suppressants dropped by air can be used to smother a fire (i.e. they remove the oxygen component of the fire triangle) or they can be used to form a thermal barrier on combustible to prevent ignition of materials like scrub and buildings. I specialise in polymer gel suppressants as opposed to DSE and CFA using Class A foam which isn't as biodegradable and non toxic as the stuff I use.

The gel soaks into the ground and bio degrades because the stuff I sell is made from canola oil. All other gels are petrochemical based and are not used by organic farmers.

I didn't think I was getting all techy about it. Seemed pretty simple to me. I could have carried on about suppressants being similar to surfactants in that they break the surface tension of water thus making the gel or foam go further than just straight water. By the way Class A only doubles the volume of water whereas gels can increase the volume by 4-8 times depending on mix ratios.
