Oscar, I've got to admit that I was absolutely horrified to find out that Sharia law was ever ALLOWED to start in Great Britain!!! How can a country be a country of laws if another group moves in and sets up their own justice and law system at odds with the original one? Didn't they just set up a country within a country? As an American, I have a SERIOUS problem with that.
We pride ourselves on being a Union, but you can't have a union if everyone is doing their own thing. That's called "Balkanization and it leads to genocide. (See: Boznia-Herzogovina War)

Barbaric and Medieval practices are encouraged under Sharia law Including amputations.
The UK has 109 Sharia courts and I think all the time they condone such barbaric practices, there Is no place In our Country for It.

Sorry Saint, I missed this post.
In the UK, the 109 Sharia law courts ( and rising) are there for the Muslim community only In civil matter relating to divorece, property settlements etc etc.
My problem Is that Sharia Law encourages this kind of Medieval practice of meteing out their own punishment and all the time they condone It, I do not think Governments In any Country should give way and pander to It.

Just for once I actually agree with you oscar. After all we have been through to set up the rule of law in this country to go back to medieval religious courts is just not on. You notice it has been sneaked in rather than an act of parliament. God bless saint tony. What is appalling is that the decisions are legally enforceable.
We shouldn't even be discussing it never mind allowing it.

It shouldn’t be allowed, it is wrong, we fight for freedoms just so that extremists use the freedoms we won to implement their own agendas.
It’s sick and needs to be stopped before it is too late.

I always believed that all institutions in this country, religious or otherwise, were still answerable to UK law. I do not believe that any institution can create a rule or law that is contrary to our laws and act on it. On the other hand, I can see how it would be difficult for anyone to see justice is done where this is the case.

Yes they are answerable to UK law but It Is the repression of women that allows Sharia Law also.
Let me give you an example... If my Muslim pal here were to divorce her husband and the divorce settlement was heard by a Sharia Court, although she worked for years to build up the family business with him, she would get barely nothing. In a British court, she would get half, quite rightly. I will always remember the look on her face when I told her we had Sharia Law here.
The stoning of women to death Is not some lunatic Islamic Extremism, It is there own rules and again I say all the time they condone It, we must end Sharia Law In the UK.
Yes, gmc... we have Blair to thank for that one !!

These two weren't even married they were engaged, presumably without their consent. Most of the law in the UK is aimed at equality and justice before the law, that extends to equal property rights for married couples and also in allowing women to own their own property within a marriage - that one goes back to the 1880's and simple things like the eldest son didn't automatically get everything. The courts are there to give someone recourse in the event of a dispute with a more powerful individual. I imagine it would be very hard for a woman to against her family and refuse to go to a sharia court and UK courts it seems don't want to interfere when the matter seems to be one of culture. I suspect the christian churches are all in favour of this as it means they can make a case for canon law to be enforced as well.
I got to know some of the east african asians that came to this country from Uganda. Apparently the divorce rate soared. I remember one of them telling me it was wonderful because they realised they now had the freedom to get away from their families and she could divorce the man she had been forced to marry. It seems to go against natural justice to allow religion such a hold again in this country. I think if more people realsied what had actually happened there would be outrage that sharia law is allowed.

The couple In the article were not married and obviously enforced Into a relationship with others of their families choosing. Here In the UK, Honour Killings are on the Increase and many young Muslim women live In fear of their lives.
To enforce Sharia Law In the UK ( although the Brits) are not affected by It, surely Is a form of colonisation?

I do not understand why a country would allow a cultural group to make up their own laws and be able to enforce them.

Sharia law is only used with consent between the parties involved, and cannot over ride UK law, and only for civil matters not criminal law.
There have been Jewish courts in the UK for many years
