CARROLL, Iowa (AP) - City officials are perplexed over the discovery of mysterious chunks of flesh that have been clogging up city water lines. A month ago, city officials sent a hunk of meaty-fatty tissue to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for identification.

As they wait for those results, three similar chunks of fleshy material were found on Thursday in another water main during routine flushing, Public Works Director Randy Krauel said.

A city worker discovered the blockage when a diffuser on a fire hydrant became clogged, Krauel said.

Additional flushing removed two other chunks from water mains, he said.

"Again, we're really not sure what it is," he said. "The pieces kind of looked like the first one. There was no hair and no real bone. There were varying degrees of the substance, whatever it is."

He speculated that the flesh likely belonged to an animal that crawled into a water main somewhere.

The new chunks also were sent to a state lab for identification.

Krauel said drinking water was not affected by the blockages and is safe to drink.

Chlorine levels have been temporarily increased as a precaution, he said.

Hey, it's not every city that has protein in it's water supply. Think of it as a supplement.

YUCK! The word "chunk" grosses me out every time they say it, and they said it like 6 times! Even if it is just a animal, I don't want its "chunks" in my water (gag). I don't know much about chemicals and water but I wouldn't want to drink/cook with it.

I would not drink or cook with it either! YUCK! I would boycott the water department and refuse to pay my water bill until it was dechunked. Enough people do it, they would find the source much faster.

Things could be even worse. You could live in Kingston-upon-Hull, which was voted `Europe`s worst town`, or even down alongside the open sewers in some of the underdeveloped countries in the world......

I have a relative in the UK who is 'water board' staff.

Should hear the stories he has to tell about THINGS they find in the water system which eventually gets drunk.

Dead sheep fermenting for days.....shall I go on..........?

Believe the officials, it don't do ye any harm. What ye dont know ye don't worry about......unless ye opt to take Environmental Health as a subject.

I don't drink 'treated water'. I can see the neighborhood well from my house and it's only my neighbors that get it. :) No yuckies here!

Whenever I travel into continental Europe, I only ever drink bottled water, no ice in a drink etc. The only place I've had tap water outside of the UK is in the US.

Now I'm hearing that there's more bacteria in bottled water (but less chunks).

No wonder W.C.Fields didn't drink the stuff

My ex worked at a pillow place that had a lot of leftover foam rubber that had to be shredded on weekends. A man would come there with his kids and do it. The shredder clogged up so he opened a small hatch and got it unclogged and turned it on and saw it was spinning ok and as he went to close the hatch his thumb went inside and sheared if right nof into the bin of foam. He told his kids to hunt for it but they could not find it and he was bleeding a lot so he chose to go on and get his hand fixed. I have often wondered if that thumb showed up in someones pillow. I guess it would smell real bad soon.

I wonder how you equate the water is fine with chunks of blubbery flesh in it ? Politicians ! They're so silly. :)
