"We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; while with others, the same word many mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men's labor. Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name - liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties, called by two different and incompatible names - liberty and tyranny." -Abraham Lincoln 1864

There's a lot of discussion out there.his daughter says he should be respected. Stack is a hero, Bell said, "because now maybe people will listen. I have many cases of people I know that are suffering in the hands of the government and people literally dying because they are not getting the help they need," she said.

The 38-year-old mother of three stopped short, however, of endorsing her father's last actions. The suicide plane attack was "inappropriate" and "wrong."

Joe Stack's daughter, Samantha Bell calls deadly Austin attack on IRS 'wrong,' but labels dad hero

From the Vancouver Sun article on the incident (linked in the OP), Feb. 19, 2010 :

At about 9:15 a.m. CST, Stack was believed to have set fire to his home with his wife, Sharon, and their daughter inside. Fire officials responded and the pair were saved.

doesn't say, just said he had a grudge against that government which is the IRS, so most likely he owed a lot in taxes.

That would also be the reason he burned down his home.

Hang on he tried to burn down his home???? And his daughter still thinks he's a hero? Was she one of the occupants of the house when it was lit?

It does suggest a degree of misreporting going on, doesn't it.

What far too many people fail to understand is government didn't rip anyone off, but the corporate elites that have gotten elected to office passed legislation that permitted the corporate industry to have at it with the American people. They are the ones that caused this problem, not the government per se.

As a minor aside, of the 400 Brits who earned more than £10 million last year, only 45 paid any British income tax at all. It's not surprising people get inflamed.

There needs to be an uprising on both sides of the Atlantic ! Maybe, but I won't hold my breath, the so-called governments will take notice of what the people are saying to them. We haven't had a good riot for some years now !!!

Exerts from Joe Stack (1956-2010) manifesto

"The communist creed: From each according to his ability, to

each according to his need.

The capitalist creed: From each according to his gullibility, to

each according to his greed.

Joe Stack (1956-2010)

Well Mr. Big Brother IRS man... take my pound of flesh and sleep well."

HMM, wonder where he stood on social issues?

"Ironically, after what they had done the Government came to the aid of the airlines with billions of our tax dollars … as usual they left me to rot and die while they bailed out their rich, incompetent cronies WITH MY MONEY!"

Wow I've heard this sort of talk on this site!!

"The rates are 1/3 of what I was earning before the crash, because pay rates here are fixed by the three or four large companies in the area who are in collusion to drive down prices and wages… and this happens because the justice department is all on the take and doesn’t give a forck about serving anyone or anything but themselves and their rich buddies."

"The recent presidential

puppet GW Bush and his cronies in their eight years certainly reinforced

for all of us that this criticism rings equally true for all of the

government. Nothing changes unless there is a body count (unless it is

in the interest of the wealthy sows at the government trough). In a

government full of hypocrites from top to bottom, life is as cheap as

their lies and their self-serving laws."

Well Mr. Big Brother IRS man... take my pound of flesh and sleep well."

Sure hope this was just an isolated case and not a new trend

So why is it when someone commits an act of terror by flying in to an fedaral building he's a hero but someone calls for universal healthcare and objects t the bank bail outs he's a dangerous socialist radical trying to overthrow american democracy in favour of a socialist state?

I don't have an answer to your question. I really think this country is screwed.

Here's an example. Seems to me people don't want socialized medicine, they want everybody to take care of themselves. All well and good but there's a problem.

You need socialism to balance the system. If everybody pays into it it's much cheaper for all. It's a shared expense. If a large proportion of the people paying into the system suddenly stop the cost for the remaining buyers are going to go up. As the price goes up more people can't afford it so they drop off and the price for those who have ins increases yet again.

I was at a hock shop just the other day looking for some hard to find tools. The manager told me to come back in a few months and I could get some real good deals on jewelry. People are selling their wedding rings diamonds and other things to buy medicine when they get sick. Some prescriptions are up to $500 for a months supply. That's without insurance.

People who are against this socialized medicine, government control and reform to some degree are in my eyes self destructive, gullible, greedy myopic idiots. I don't know what to do about it. Let it all fall to pieces then we'll see who cries loudest.

Twas it not ever so? I can't judge not being an american but it seems there is a real groundswell for change. I think the internet makes a big difference-the big media corporations are not as in control as they would like to be and for every noisy activist on either side there are ten voters thinking about it.

On the other hand the UK is really F----d up just now. The next two elections are going to be very interesting indeed.
