(Jan. 7) -- A long-delayed European Union project to build a global satellite navigation system finally got off the ground today, with initial contracts totaling about $1.5 billion being awarded to a British-German consortium.

The project, named Galileo, is intended as Europe's version of the U.S. Global Positioning System, or GPS, and to offer marked improvements.

The system's advanced technology is designed to give users quicker and more reliable data, within an accuracy of about a yard, compared with the several yards delivered today by GPS.
