In the middle of a voracious essay session, my computer went phhhhhtttttppp! I tried to restart it, then all it would say, floppy not found, disk not found...bloody ba$tard wouldnt even go into bios!

So I immediately got dressed, and went looking for bargains. Found one in Currys. Nice laptop. But I still have stuff on my hardrive that needs retrieving. Any suggestions?

Something is seriously wrong with my PC. This is the second time it has done this. It's like it auto reconfigures or something.

At least I can finish my essays. Have to start all over though and the clock is ticking.

It sound like its is your hard drive, virus, spam or all 3 of these. You need to purchase a flash drive or an external hard drive and try to get it into SAFE MODE and copy everything off your old machine to your external drive if it will go into safe mode.

Might be less of a hassle to take it to someone and pay them to put your files from your old system on a USB flash drive you can then just copy them up to your new machine.

If you live close to SPOT call him he can do it for you.

I have windows xp on my pc. How do I get it into safe mode Carla? Its sound advice, however I am sorely tempted to just throw the dang thing out the window!

SAFE MODE: turn your machine off, as you turn it on again immediately start tapping the F8 (FUNCTION KEY) it will then bring up a menu with options for safe mode. I always select "Safe mode with network" it will boot up and tell you that your entering safe mode you will logon like you normally do. Certain function don't work in safe mode but attaching a USB thumb drive or USB external drive should work. Then you can just send everything that is important to the drive.

If you have malwarebytes run it in safe mode and see what it finds and delete whatever it finds.

If you decide to throw the machine away please open it up and remove your hard drive and destroy it then trash what is left.

It's been a while for me, Raven, but I believe if you keep hitting either the "esc" key or one of the "F" keys during startup, you will go into the setup and then you can choose safe mode from there. I'm sure you've noticed while starting your computer in the past the message on the bottom of the screen for set up - thats where it tells you which key it is that gets you there.

Whatever you do, don't throw the computer away. You can always just install a better OS on it that doesn't get any of those things Carla spoke of.

Not good. Sounds like the motherboard chipset died.

The hard drive may be sound. Stop trying to boot the thing.

Find someone who can copy your hard drive to a flash, and move your files to a new PC.

Sorry, that's the best I've got for you. I hope you recover your data. The system can be restored or as I said you can always use something like Ubuntu. There are plenty of us here on FG that can help you with that, though once installed, you don't need much help in the way of trouble shooting. Its just the new look and layout of the screen that requires a little getting used to.

Good advice get it to a pro and have them flash your drive and copy to new machine not worth saving.

yeah that sounds about right. I think it will be wise to invest into an external hard drive as well.

I just cant be without one at this point because my uni work is so demanding.

External drives are a must I have a pretty large one that I use to backup everyone in my families important documents to. It has saved us many time as you don't have to worry about lost data. I just make a folder for each person and copy paste everything for that person to their folder bingo done.

yeah we have pictures and a whole bucket load of music and two years of university on that pc! I must admit to almost having a panic attack. Like I said before, this is the 2nd time it's done this. The guy who fixed it, asked if anyone had been messing with the configuration or something. Noone had. It just goes into this weird mode. And putting in the loading disk for windows doesnt help.
