Swiss ban minarets

would not banning these things make normal law loving muslims think that they were being picked on and then maybe go all extremist

I think its an interesting result, and of course we all await the inevitable "outrage" from the Middle East and beyond with a grim inevitability.
I personally respect the right of the Swiss people to determine their own constitutional affairs, as I would expect the same for my own country.
Obviously this result reflects a desire among Swiss people to assert the primacy of their civilization and culture in their country in an unambiguous way. That is not unreasonable in my opinion.
A similar referendum in almost any other European country would result in the same outcome in my opinion, probably with a larger majority. Such referendums are unlikely to be held however.
