Each year in Sydney there is a big exhibition of outdoor sculpture and loads of people walk along the cliffs from Bondi Beach to Coogee, enjoying the sunshine and the artistry.

I'm heading there shortly - with camera

I put my favourite photos on a webpage.

Sculptures by the Sea 2009

Most are sculptures... grin. But not all. And one of the three rock photos was the prize winner... created by a 90 year old who got awarded $60,000 for it. (You can buy it for $150,000). The other rocks were created by a much older hand.

There is one sculpture which my resemble Nomad - but I've never met Nomad, so I could be way off the mark.

The strange conifer cages won a prize too. They are called Where is the Freedom. An Iranian woman sent that sculpture.

The Little Lost Boy really is a sculpture. A bit larger than life, but with real hair. There was a bit of controversy about his nakedness. One of the local councillors insisted he wear swimming briefs. But people kept taking them off him. Heck, he's just a kid. There's loads of naked kids on the beach.

The horse and rider are made entirely out of straw. Fantastic!!

My personal favourite was the strange green fern thing, which sort of undulated in the sea breeze. Morpheus. Though I can't see the connection to the god of sleep.

My photo didn't really do justice to the tree. The top of it was kind of silvery, the bottom darker. I immediately thought of Yggdrasil - in Norse mythology the mystical tree which connects and shelters all the worlds. The kid sitting beside it was caught up by the magic.

The exhibition notes say the tree - by West Australian Kevin Draper - is called 'fragment'. And don't really shed any light on what the sculpture is about.

Art is indeed funny. The lizards were real. The pink flowers were pink flowers, though the mushrooms were unreal. And the trash can / rubbish bin - was an actual trash can/ rubbish bin.

I loved the signs. Particularly the one pointing to the car park one way, and eternal youth the other way...

What a fascinating display, Pam. I don't know of anything similar being done in the UK, which is a pity. Mind you, if it was I would expect the yobs would soon ruin the lot, unless councils arranged 24/7 security ! :rolleyes: What a world we live in !

I think my favourite is the straw horse and rider - a quite remarkable piece of work. I wonder if it can be preserved. :-6

Lovely, Abbey - the sculpture exhibition closes after next weekend. I might see if I can manage to go back sometime during the week, when there's less of a crowd and catch up on a few things I missed. This is a yearly event. The cliff walk is one I do from time to time anyway - wonderful views of rock formations and of the sea.

The "tribute to a workhorse" is by Belinda Villani - who notes that "her father's love of horses stemmed from his migrant inner city childhood contact with the local workhorses rather than the romantic idea of the outback horse and rider". You can have that for $15,000. It's actually steel and woven rattan.
