Weight and relationships

Got into an interesting discussion with the Lad last nite.
I am on a frantic kick to shed some "roundness" from the ab area. And so was telling him about my week or exercise and what not. He was most encouraging and offered to "coach" (silly fitness buff that he is) and I turned him down I do best on my own. Ok sooooo he went on to say, when he was married he suggested to his then wife that she shed a few lb's and she flat out refused and actually went the other direction. (to the point some aunt asked when she was expecting)
So my question here is, when in a stable relationship, how would you take it if your partner pointed out politely that they thought you were getting a little on the "weighty" side? And would you work on changing that for the better? Or worst?
Myself I would be a number of things, first mortified that it was noticible, second glad my partner was kind in their approach and then bust my ass to get my shape back. I think bottom line I would appreciate the gesture and support in my efforts.
He was soooooo incredibly kind in never pointing out the weight gain (he watched me increase my size 2 full clothing sizes from when we met) Albiet I was unhealthyly tiny. And am currently at my standard of the past 100 years size now.
I guess it is all in approach, how it is pointed out and how much we want to admit we have flaws. But his agreeing with me and my plans was not offensive, maybe we are still in the lust stage and I would never see anything as insulting from him ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
