Someone once asked me where surnames come from. I figure it was something like this:
"Where've you been? You've been out drinking with Bob again, haven't you?"
"No, of course not. I haven't seen bob since he quit his job."
"Not that Bob! And don't try to change the subject. You know who I'm talking about. I know you and Bob are sneaking out to that strip bar."
"Oh. THAT Bob. No, he found Jesus."
"Don't be thick! I know damned well Bob's quit drinking. If I thought you were with that Bob I'd rest easy. I'll have you know I've hired a private detective to follow you."
"What's his name?"
"Bob."
"If he saw anything, he only saw me talking with Bob the smith about some new shoes for the horse."
"You're going to stand there and tell me you didn't go out drinking with John's son Bob?"
"Bob? John's son? Never heard of him."

Word History: Ditto, which at first glance seems a handy and insignificant sort of word, actually has a Roman past, for it comes from dictus, "having been said," the past participle of the verb dīcere, "to say." In Italian dīcere became dire and dictus became detto, or in the Tuscan dialect ditto. Italian detto or ditto meant what said does in English, as in the locution "the said story." Thus the word could be used in certain constructions to mean "the same as what has been said"; for example, having given the date December 22, one could use 26 detto or ditto for 26 December. The first recorded use of ditto in English occurs in such a construction in 1625. The sense "copy" is an English development, first recorded in 1818. Ditto has even become a trademark for a duplicating machine.
I think it means Junior, as in "I'd like you to meet Bill, Jr." :yh_bigsmi
