As I just bit the bullet & bought a new Puter!!! (It was a really big deal for me, I'm a serious procrastinator) After over a year & a half of proscrastinating, looking & searching, looking, comparing, testing, & whatever!!! It arrives about in a week!! It's a high power HP! Wish us luck, hope we finally bought the right one! Time will tell. :-3
Laptop vs desktop was a major decision! Since puter here in NE was crap & needed to be replaced, the puter in our Southern villa has turned to crap as well. A laptop could have been used in both places. But we used our daughters laptop for a few days, and my wife & I really didn't take to it. So we'll need to replace that Southern POS puter as well come the winter time!
Congratulations are in order . . . . .

Congrads to you Cars! I'm looking into getting a laptop for myself (no kids would be able to use it):sneaky:. They have a rotten habit of polluting pc's.

Yes no surprise here. Was not looking for the latest & greatest, just needed to replace our damaged puter! For no reason, our current puter keeps on loosing "free space" in the HD. For every "1"% of lost free space, the putter slows down 10 to 15 seconds between comands! It's down to "63" % free space! So. . . . . . . .

That's really only true if your use of the equipment is in a constant state of change and needing upgrade.
If you are doing the same thing day to day snd using the same programs, there is no reason your machine can't last for years and years. Folks tend to think they need new, when simply cleaning up what they have can enhance performance.
But I have machines here running 98. They just keep humming along... a loud hum from time to time.. but humming..

Happy you are getting a new computer, cars. Enjoy!
Your thread also brings this question up : How often do we do maintence on our computers? Scanning for errors, defragging, cleaning up our disks? I try to do mine a couple times a month.
Also I want to ask is it a good idea to "compress drive to save disk space" when you go to clean up the disk?

I don't see the point in compressing drives. In these days of terrabyte drives for a couple of hundred quid disk space is cheap and compressing a drive takes processing power that's better used to improve response times.
By all means clean and defrag the drive - that should be a weekly task on most computers to keep IO times down.
At the same time check to see what processes are running straight after boot-up as many "useful" programs load totally useless quickstarters and update schedulers etc that take valuable resources.
Most importantly of all, update your virus checker and run a scan daily and run Windows Update weekly to keep up with the security patches.

Our current puter is so bad, it keeps on freezing up, so much so, that I defrag, & clean disks daily, many times twice daily! :wah: Can't wait till the new puter gets here!

Can't believe the new puter arrived a week ago today, & with our grandson visiting from KC, I never had a chance to take it out of the box yet!!! (Still using this ol POS puter)
He returned home Monday night, but I had so many unfinished chores to do that I still didn't even get round to it yesterday. So later on in the morning today, I plan on unpacking it at least!
(I'm such a procrastinator, always was, guess always will be) :wah: (I hate trying to transfer over all the data to the new puter)
If I'm not on for a few days, I had puter "Install" problems)

Well over the past two days, had many "incompability" problems between many of my current software systems, trying to integrate them with my new WINDOWS VISTA system! VISTA was not compatable with any of them, what in the hell is it actually compatable with??!
After several hours on the phone yesterday with a tech help puter geek, thankfully, he walked me through setting up & downloading all the drives & software I needed! Whorahhh!

I went from Windows ME to Vista recently. I like XP better, but everything I looked at was Vista. I'm finally getting used to it. It's not so bad when you get used to it.
