I had not heard of this, it's interesting. The first thing I find impressive is that the process was developed by a couple of prisoners of war at Changi Jail.

So. Two people, A and B, who may be at different locations by miles. B is under close observation and definitely can't communicate back to A. B has to announce a message and it has to match the message which has been provided by person C to A moments earlier.

So.

A definitely has to provide B with the answer, or B won't be able to announce it.

A can either do this days before, or during the run up to the announcement after they've been separated. The first requires no unrecognised channel, the second needs one.

If A conveys the message days before then A needs to plant the message on the person C who selects it on the day. C believes herself to be the author of the message, because the feat is performed many times over the years and not all C can be stooges.

So we have the following two statements, at least one of which is true.

Either C can be fooled into choosing a message which A has already agreed.

Or B can get the message from A in the immediate run-up to announcing it.

Or, pointlessly, both.

The fact that A is always on air with an entertainment broadcast unit suggests that, if B can detect the broadcast, that's an adequate channel for the message to be passed. The performance is always given live, just as it was in Changi Jail.

But I suspect it's more likely that A talks C into selecting the particular pre-arranged message.

I can't think of a third alternative.

Your posts remind me of the lectures in my Degree Ancillary course in Logic .

Happy and unhappy days . Headaches . But well done !!

The few commentaries I have scanned suggest that Mrs P ( Frances? ) plays no part in the 'magic' other than being a deflector and vehicle for what is effectively the punch line .

This means that the person working with Mr P is the technician or link announcer ,

But I still cannot work out their system .

Or even get within a hundred miles of it .

Allegedly the solution is known within the Magic Circle but that hardly helps my protesting brain .

A nice band called Lake Street Dive featuring all accomplished musicians, but mainly Rachael Price as lead vocalist. She does all sorts of genres. She's one of my favorites to listen to.

If you enjoy listening to jazz you'll like Joan Chamorro, Andrea Motis and their band. This concert is all about the music. Allow it to play in the background if sitting through the concert is boring for you. the music and musicianship are worth the bandwidth.

ETA: For those who'd like to hear a piece that might be familiar, check out Ain't No Sunshine at the 1:43:00 mark. It moves!

It's interesting how a bunch of people with quite probably greater powers than the original band members, with just as capable a delivery, can make something with such a different impact.

I don't think objectivity is possible. The original resonates through familiarity and invariably lifts the hairs. This clip is an excellent reminder of what existed, with a magnificent singer and a precise collection of instrumentalists. I feel I've been told the story of what Grace Slick did by a skilled storyteller but I haven't been dragged screaming backwards down a rabbit hole by an outraged protester.

I think your post is a precise description of exactly what Rachel Price attempts to do in her covers. Listening to her sing is like observing the difference of what technology has achieved, on say, video resolution. She is so precise that it allows the listener who is familiar with the track to get past the fact that it isn't the original and is what time has seen happen technically in the advancement of vocals and admire that.

Grace Slick was an outstanding singer, though untrained and raw in her delivery. Singers like Slick achieved their essence emotionally whereas Price does so technically. Rachel brings the past into the present where vocal advancement is now part of the music culture. And she does this very respectfully and about as perfect as I think we can expect.
