While out last week, we popped into a fairly low key resturant in Dorset for some munch and i was quite astonished to find frogs legs on the menu.

I have been googling to see if other folk are taking to this dish and found this article. It is out of date but i had no idea that the popularity of frogs had risen here like this.

Oh, I have never tried them. I had too many froggies as pets as a child.

Had them in Belgium. Absolutely delicious but not enough meat to get fat on.

Love snails too. I'd have them if I saw them on the menu

A lot of people here eat them and like them. I refuse to try them. If I'm going to eat something that "tastes like chicken", it IS going to be chicken.

What actually happened was there was a couple on a table behind us eating them. We'd just sat down but the smell from them was delicious. Having earned my Grade A snooping badge at the age of 6, i told them, their dish looked nice and asked what it was. I thought they were taking the pisse until we'd sat down and looked at the menu. My sis's 4 yr old started crying and asking questions as to how the frog was going to get across the road with no legs.

I have to say..... I was very very tempted but went with the Muscles in garlic and butter sauce instead. :wah:

I will never know what snake tastes like. :wah:

So does crocodile. A bit chewier with a very slight fishy taste.

It was OK but I wouldnt go out my way to have it again

I had shark..... a bit chewy but nice strong flavour.

I've had ostrich. Wonderful meat. Had it in a Mongolian restaraunt

So you prefer muscles over frogs legs?

I have tasted them once. Taste like white meat, similar to chicken.

I had froggies also as a pet to, there was 3 gigantic ponds close to home...I use to go and get tapoles and bring them back in a tank set up for them......It was the most incredible experience to watch them grow......and they were only the size of quarter full grown!:yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl



....now I have 2 aquatic frogs in my fish tank....I would never eat froggies!:(

They taste like chicken wings, similar consistency too. Hard to find on a French menu these days. I think they're out of fashion in France.

Eating frogs probably started in poor rural areas - like a lot of foods which later became delicacies.

Thanks Oscar. Just passing by - and couldn't resist a moment's contemplation of French cuisine I expect snails fit into a similar category to froglegs. You're out in the country, trying to make ends meet and you use anything you can get. I've eaten very fine pigeon in Provence too. Country pigeons and vineyards do well together, and farmers value their birds. You still find snails on menus, but rarely now the leetle legs of ze froggies. Bon app !!

i lived in Belgium for 3 years and never managed to eat frogs or snails:yh_rotfl I did however eat horse:oalbeit mistakenly

yea thats what i mean ,,, why??? i bet you couldnt eat pork or beef if you kept that animal as a pet for a while

But needs must....the Chinese make a really smashing dish of snake, by all accounts, who was it who went round the world? One of the ex Python mob??? Super series, snake is a delicacy, but beyond me to try any, although this is said to taste like chicken

China has a long history of starvation, so its likely what they eat is a direct result of trying to keep alive, snakes, insects, grubs, birds, dogs, cats, anything and everything, and who can blame them at that time in their history. We have to walk in their boots to really understand.

Seems a lot of odd to eat animals taste like chicken. Wonder why?

You should tell the waiter to wipe the menu clean. It's bad enough to find gravy spilled over the menu let alone frogs legs.:rolleyes:

Many years ago I ate Frogs Legs and Stuffed Sparrow.....didnt know what I had eaten till after the event....true the legs did taste like chicken....but no I would never have eaten either if I had known what the hell I was eating before I had.Still everyones different and to some I guess its the norm.

I have a little policy of my own in that although i will try a dish once out of curiosity, i don't eat anything that i consider killing completely un-necessarilly. Oscar, bunny wabbits and bambis are delicious. So are pheasants, peacocks cushats.

The biggest problem I have is that I refuse to eat farmed meat of any kind.

But I;m still a carnivore..........

I have pheasants that visit my garden alot living where I am....beautiful creatures and often think why we have to kill them in the name of sport to eat.Man is just plain greedy its that simple and if it has 4 legs or can fly or even swim ....well kill it and eat it as animals were put here for us to eat and for nothing else .I also am a hypocrite regarding animals and something im not proud of.I have kept chickens....ducks....rabbits and even a goat and still have geese.....no way would I eat them but instead I go to the supermarket and buy a bird that has been fattened up.....treated badly prob and full of gawd knows what and because I havent seen them running around its ok....well it aint and as I have said im not proud of this. I have sheep in a field near me...I go and see the baby lambs jumping around and I fill up with tears as im going home to a lamb dinner....oh I so admire people who have strong principles regarding animals and just wont eat them and so wish I could do the same.....maybe one day who knows but I really dont know why we have to eat so many different animals now and guess we are all different is the answer and some just enjoy the different tastes....a subject im afraid that will never be agreed about.

There are two types of veal available white veal produced in the old fashioned way keeping the calf in a crate ect and pink veal which although the animal is still very young when slaughtered it leads a fairly 'normal' life until then freedom of movement proper food ect.

I dont eat white veal,pate de fois gras or lobster, for the same reason dont like the way its produced. I do or have eaten just about most meats though incl rabbit, duck,kangaroo, ostrich, venison and horse.

Yea ,, Janet Street Porter once did an experiment with that,, bringing up the calves humanely and giving them freedom etc,, to produce some tasty veal,, it was on Gordon Ramsey's F word programme i think
