Wow.............Hope the Gov. don't sign it!!!
SANTA FE, N.M. -- The New Mexico Legislature has voted to repeal the death penalty.
The bill now goes to Gov. Bill Richardson. He has opposed a repeal in the past, but says he would consider signing the bill. Richardson released a statement regarding the passage of the bill, saying he "will continue to consider all sides of the issue before making a decision."
The Senate voted 24-18 on Friday in favor of the bill, which replaces capital punishment with a sentence of life without parole. The House approved the bill a month ago.
Two men are on death row, and the repeal would not affect their sentences.
Voting yes, to repeal the death penalty, were 24 Democrats. Voting no were 15 Republicans and three Democrats.
The death penalty bill is HB285.
